Burns & McDonnell Section Manager - Transmission & Distribution in Newton, Massachusetts

Description This position is responsible for the managerial direction and leadership of the Transmission & Distribution (T&D) team within the Boston Branch Office which currently consists of people within Transmission, Substation, Protection Applications, NIA, and Project Management Departments. This role is pivotal in building a strong, cohesive T&D presence in Boston, driving local project execution and profitable growth while ensuring alignment with the broader T&D Global Practice goals and standards.

The Boston T&D Section Manager will be at the forefront of T&D’s expansion in the Boston area. The successful candidate will blend team leadership with direct responsibility for team growth, performance, project success, client satisfaction, and financial performance. This individual will serve as the primary point of contact for T&D matters within the Boston office, acting as a crucial liaison between the Branch Office Manager and the Regional T&D Global Practice leadership. Specific areas of responsibility include the following:

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Team Development:

  • Lead the Boston T&D team, fostering an inclusive, supportive, and collaborative culture aligned with Burns & McDonnell's core values of safety, client satisfaction, and integrity.

  • Champion staff development by identifying training needs, providing mentorship, and facilitating career growth opportunities in collaboration with the T&D Global Practice.

  • Organize and conduct the annual performance appraisal process for Boston T&D staff. In coordination with T&D GP management, set KPIs and Goals for all Boston-based T&D team members.

  • Make Boston a T&D employment destination of choice by continuing to build our brand with local universities and in the T&D industry by being present at industry events, serving as a thought leader, and giving back to the local community.

  • Focus on staff retention by promoting a positive work environment and ensuring team members are engaged in challenging and meaningful work.

  • In collaboration with Regional T&D Global Practice leadership and aligned with the Regional T&D hiring plan, implement the T&D hiring strategy for personnel levels 11 and below for the Boston office by proactively partnering with the HR Recruiting team to identify, assess, interview, hire, and onboard talent to support strategic growth. For personnel level 12 and above, collaborate with Regional T&D Global Practice leadership to support the identification, assessment, interviewing, and onboarding of talent to support strategic growth.

Project & Financial Management:

  • Take responsibility for the overall success of components of projects executed by the Boston T&D team, ensuring targets for safety, quality, and profitability are met.

  • Directly manage the planning, budgeting, and achievement of select projects for the local T&D portfolio.

  • Oversee team chargeability and utilization to meet the financial goals of the Boston T&D team and report regularly on progress, cost, profit, and schedule.

  • Demonstrate creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in anticipating and solving technical and project-related challenges.

Business & Client Development:

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of the T&D business plan for the Boston market; lead and support proposal efforts to secure profitable growth.

  • Identify project opportunities early, facilitate go/no-go decisions, and assist in preparing and negotiating contracts.

  • Act as a local point of contact for key T&D clients in the region, working closely with project teams to ensure client satisfaction and successful project delivery.

Collaboration & Strategy Implementation:

  • Serve as the key implementation leader for T&D Global Practice initiatives, processes, and technical development plans for the Boston-based staff.

  • Ensure adherence to all company and global practice quality standards across all projects.

  • Foster strong relationships and communication between the Boston T&D team, the Branch Manager, and Regional T&D Global Practice leadership to ensure seamless collaboration.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering program from an accredited program.

  • Minimum of 5 years of related professional experience in engineering design and/or project management. Seven (7) years preferred.

  • Professional Engineering (PE) registration is strongly preferred.

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is preferred.

  • Proven experience in personnel management, including mentorship, performance feedback, and team development is strongly preferred.

  • Strong working knowledge of project financials, with demonstrated ability to manage scope, schedule, budget, and risk on complex projects.

  • Strong project management skills and a strategic perspective, with experience in client and business development activities is strongly preferred.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with a proven ability to present complex information clearly to staff, management, and clients.

  • History of high performance within the Burns & McDonnell performance management system.

Compensation

$120,000.00-400,000.00 Yearly

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
