State of Vermont Aviation Maintenance Worker I - Temporary in Newport, Vermont

Overview

The Agency of Transportation (VTrans) is seeking a part-time Aviation Maintenance Worker I in Newport, VT. The Aviation Maintenance Worker is a mission critical position with responsibilities that include keeping the airport safely operating in compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and State of Vermont regulations. Aviation Maintenance Workers are required to undergo extensive training in airport operations to work on an airfield. This position works in close coordination with another full time Airport Maintenance Worker II that is assigned to the airport.

\ Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Complete daily required inspection of the airfield and surrounding area to ensure the surfaces are safe for use, FAA safety items are compliant, wildlife hazards are managed, and there are no foreign items on the surfaces
  • Weekly inspection of navigational aids involving hazard beacons, obstruction and runway lights
  • Ensure compliance with hazardous materials including documentation of receipt proper storage, proper handling, and current MSDS sheets are available to users
  • Conduct extensive snow removal operations during winter months, utilizing several types of snow removal equipment and heavy machinery
  • General groundskeeping, mowing, tree removal and facilities maintenance projects during warmer months
  • Basic pavement maintenance, including crack sealing and line painting
  • Issue Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) and flight conditions of the airport
  • Monitor activity with tenants of the airport (hangar owners, businesses, etc.)
  • General ground and facilities maintenance and upkeep as necessary
  • Regular interaction with pilots, airport users, and contractors
  • Response to emergency situations on the airport

A candidate for this position may be required to work extensive overtime in some situations to meet the needs described above, including weekends and holidays.

Environmental Factors

Work is performed both in a facility as well as in the field. Duties require exposure to extreme outdoor weather. An incumbent must be available for considerable overtime during heavy snowfall or other emergencies. Employees may be required to report to work outside of their work schedule and must be reachable by phone. An employee must be able to use tools and lift equipment commonly used in routine maintenance work. Normal dangers associated with work on or near heavy equipment, hazardous materials, responding to accidents, emergencies and natural disasters are present. May be exposed to blood and airborne pathogens. Participation in a random drug and alcohol-testing program is required. Travel throughout the state to various airports may be required.
