Staff Accountant (Contract‑to‑Hire)

About the Role
You’ll join a growing construction company based in Newburgh, NY, supporting day‑to‑day and month‑end accounting operations. This contract‑to‑hire position is ideal for someone who thrives in a hands‑on environment, enjoys variety, and can keep pace with a business where no two days look the same. You’ll work closely with the Controller and project teams to ensure our financial foundation is rock‑solid.
What You’ll Do
Prepare and post accurate journal entries for monthly, quarterly, and year‑end close.
Reconcile balance sheet accounts and investigate discrepancies with a detective’s mindset.
Support the preparation of financial statements and internal management reporting.
Analyze variances and help resolve issues across projects, departments, and accounts.
Maintain the integrity of the general ledger through ongoing review and documentation.
Assist with audit requests, schedules, and supporting documentation.
Partner with project managers, operations, and finance to keep accounting workflows smooth.
Identify opportunities to streamline processes and strengthen internal controls.
Work within Sage (experience a plus!) to support construction‑specific accounting needs.
Requirements
What You Bring
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Strong understanding of GAAP and core accounting principles.
Experience with ERP systems—Sage experience is a major bonus.
Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, formulas).
A sharp analytical mindset and strong organizational skills.
Excellent communication and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently, prioritize effectively, and meet tight deadlines.
Preferred Experience
Public accounting or audit experience.
Exposure to large or matrixed organizations.
Experience with financial analysis, budgeting, or construction accounting workflows.
