City of New York Health Management Division (HMD) Intern in New York, New York

Job Description

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.

The Health Management Division (HMD) is seeking two motivated Summer Interns to support our transition to electronic record management. HMD plays a crucial role in managing sick leave, medical appointments, and documentation for Department of Corrections (DOC) personnel. This internship will provide valuable hands-on experience in health management and documentation processes.

  • Assist in the management of sick leave and medical appointment documentation for DOC personnel.

  • Support the "sick desk" operations, including handling sick call-ins and tracking staff return-to-duty dates.

  • Collaborate with HMD staff to develop and implement record management protocols in compliance with internal processes and external regulations.

  • Perform quality assurance reviews of existing records and documentation to ensure accuracy and adherence to standards.

  • Assist in the digitization and electronic scanning of records to enhance archival efficiency and accessibility.

  • Streamline workflows related to digital record management operations and help improve organizational effectiveness.

  • Contribute to departmental strategic objectives aimed at enhancing record preservation through secure digital methods.

Qualifications

As of June of the Program year the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).

NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.
