Overview

The New York Public Library consists of four major research libraries and 88 branch libraries located in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island.

NYPL is seeking an Assistant Security Supervisor to maintain an environment that is safe and comfortable for our Library users and employees. The Assistant Security Supervisor is responsible for overall security at NYPL buildings. They will respond to emergencies, perform general security duties, document unusual incidents and serve in relief of the Security Supervisor. They must work as a member of the Security team, act professionally and demonstrate courtesy and respect to all.

*Must be available to work evening, weekend and/or holiday hours*

Some expectations for this role are that within:

1 month, this person will:

  • Learn the goals of security leadership

  • Be able to respond to emergency situations

3 months, this person will:

  • Work on building leadership influence and learning the operating systems of security technology devices

  • Be able to conduct investigations utilizing interviewing techniques and available technologies

6 months and beyond, this person will:

  • Develop a personalized leadership style to enhance performance of assigned guards

  • Develop strong relationships with staff, patrons and first responder community

Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of a Security Supervisor, the Assistant Supervisor, Security:

  • Enforces NYPL’s rules of conduct for all patrons and visitors

  • Periodically tours building and grounds, examining doors and windows to determine whether they are secure and not tampered with

  • Identifies and questions unauthorized persons , and requests assistance from security or police if necessary

  • Ensures that NYPL users, staff and other outside contractors adhere to the rules of security to prevent theft, fire, damage, and personal injury

  • Provides security presence at special events, including private screenings, parties, etc.

  • Writes comprehensive incident reports to assist with investigations and to ensure NYPL maintains documentation of all incidents

  • Reports any unusual conditions or malfunctions in heating, plumbing, electrical or other parts of the buildings mechanical systems to facilities services

  • Utilize security cameras as part of the security strategy

  • Works at any assigned post and other NYPL facilities as needed

  • Fill in for the Security Supervisor when the Security Supervisor is out

  • Performs related duties as required

Required Education, Experience & Skills

Required Education & Certifications

  • Associate’s Degree in related field or 2+ years of additional related experience

  • Must have a valid New York State Security Guard License

Required Experience

  • 4+ years of prior security, military service or law enforcement experience

Required Skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with staff and public

  • Ability to work at any assigned post

  • Must pass physical examination

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise alertness and good judgment in cases of emergency

  • Knowledge of the CCTV system, card access system, access control system and other electronic and physical security systems as needed

  • Knowledge of the rules and regulations of the library

Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Ensure guards are adhering to standards set by security leadership and are performing at optimum levels

  • Assist with recruitment efforts for contract guards

  • Responsible for performance management for direct reports
