Job Title: Millwright/Mechanical Installation Technician
Job Description
The Mechanical Installation Technician assembles and installs conveyor systems and an advanced grid automation structure, along with associated peripheral systems, within a large distribution facility. You work in small, safety-focused teams, using hand and power tools and operating lifts as needed, to complete precise mechanical installations that support commissioning and go-live of the facility.
Responsibilities
Assemble and install multiple conveyor systems and grid automation structures according to technical instructions and layout plans.
Install and complete the Ocado grid automation structure and associated peripheral systems within a new distribution facility.
Perform grid installation activities including cladding, false bottom totes, grid finishing, peripheral stations, maintenance areas, and charging stations.
Support commissioning and go-live activities by completing mechanical installation tasks to required quality and precision standards.
Work effectively as part of small installation teams to coordinate tasks, share information, and meet project deadlines.
Use a wide range of hand and power tools safely and efficiently to assemble, fasten, align, and adjust mechanical components.
Work at heights using scissor lifts, aerial work platforms, and platforms as required, following all safety procedures.
Operate forklifts where licensed and assigned, to move materials, components, and equipment around the construction site.
Read measurements accurately using measuring tapes, levels, and squares to ensure precise alignment and fit of installed components.
Follow construction site rules and procedures, including lockout/tagout and other safety protocols, to maintain a safe work area.
Inspect completed installations for alignment, stability, and quality, and make adjustments or corrections as needed.
Collaborate with team members and supervisors to identify and resolve installation issues or obstacles that arise on site.
Maintain and use personal tools, ensuring they are in good working condition and available each day as per the required tool list.
Handle materials, parts, and equipment in a manner that minimizes damage and supports efficient workflow.
Document and communicate any safety concerns, near misses, or incidents promptly to support a strong safety culture.
Essential Skills
Minimum of 3+ years of experience in conveyor installation, construction labor, millwright work, welding, or similar mechanical installation roles.
Proven mechanical aptitude and the ability to assemble and install mechanical systems with precision.
Strong experience using hand and power tools in a heavy-duty or industrial construction environment.
Experience working at heights, including on platforms and lifts, while following safety procedures.
Ability to work safely and consistently on an active construction site.
Comfort working in a heavy-duty, industrial construction environment with ongoing installation activities.
Experience with forklifts, scissor lifts, and other aerial work platforms (AWPs) or willingness to operate them where licensed.
Ability to read and use measuring tools such as measuring tapes, levels, and squares for accurate installation.
Strong teamwork skills with the ability to collaborate in small crews to complete tasks efficiently and safely.
Reliable work habits, including bringing and maintaining the required personal tool set each day.
Certification to operate scissor lifts (required for all workers prior to starting).
Valid forklift license for at least one out of every three workers on the team.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Previous experience installing conveyors, grid systems, or similar automated material handling systems.
Background in construction, industrial installation, or mechanical assembly in a heavy-duty environment.
Experience with controls or familiarity with mechanically related control systems is an asset.
Forklift and aerial work platform (boom or scissor) experience is a strong asset.
Ability to adapt to changing schedules, including extended hours and overtime when project demands increase.
Strong focus on safety, including consistent use of PPE and adherence to site safety procedures.
Ability to interpret basic instructions, drawings, or layout guidance for mechanical installations.
Physical ability to work on your feet, handle tools and materials, and work at heights throughout the shift.

Work Environment
This role is based in a large distribution facility operating as an active construction and installation site. The standard schedule runs from approximately 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, with additional hours or schedule changes as project needs require. During peak periods, you may work up to around 60 hours per week, typically as five 12-hour shifts or six 10-hour shifts, as discussed with the project team. Work takes place in an industrial setting that may involve noise, dust, and heavy equipment, and you may work on elevated platforms and scissor lifts as required. Some team members will operate forklifts to move materials and equipment. You must wear appropriate personal protective equipment at all times and follow all safety procedures. Technicians must bring and use their own basic mechanical tool kit, including at minimum: socket set (7/16" to 3/4"), wrench set (7/16" to 3/4"), screwdriver set, hammer, rubber mallet, 6" torpedo level, square, small pry bar, 10" and 12" adjustable wrenches, imperial measuring tape, Allen key set, and drift.
