The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in providing high-quality patient care by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate labeling and handling of specimens, and supporting efficient workflow in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. This role also contributes to troubleshooting, training, and making workflow improvement recommendations while maintaining strict adherence to safety and regulatory standards.
Responsibilities
Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a professional and efficient manner.
Collect, handle, and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
Accurately match laboratory requisition forms or computer-generated labels to specimen tubes to ensure correct patient and test identification.
Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain specimen integrity.
Verify all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
Package specimens securely and appropriately for transport, following all protocols to preserve specimen quality.
Store specimens at the required temperatures and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes, following protocol-specific procedures.
Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems and records.
Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory procedures.
Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing and specimen collection.
Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory guidelines.
Attend and participate in annual department trainings and other required educational sessions.
Answer telephone calls in a professional manner and read or relay laboratory results to satisfy inquiries, following applicable policies.
Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, and workflow, and make recommendations for process improvements.
Support training efforts for team members by demonstrating proper phlebotomy and specimen handling techniques as needed.
Essential Skills
Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
2–4 years of overall relevant experience in phlebotomy, laboratory support, or a closely related field.
Proven proficiency in performing blood draws, venipuncture, and specimen collection using straight needles and butterfly needles.
Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to test requirements and protocols.
Strong attention to detail to ensure 100% accuracy in matching requisitions and labels to specimen tubes.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
High School Diploma or GED.
Thorough understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations and the ability to apply them in daily work.
Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients and to communicate with clinical staff.
Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and patient focus.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience working in both laboratory and hospital environments is beneficial.
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot issues in specimen collection and workflow and suggest practical improvements.
Comfort with reading and understanding physicians’ orders and translating them into accurate laboratory actions.
Strong organizational skills to manage multiple specimens, requisitions, and tasks simultaneously.
Customer service mindset with the ability to handle patient inquiries and telephone calls professionally.
Willingness to participate in ongoing training and departmental education to maintain and enhance skills.
Work Environment
This role is based in a clinical laboratory or hospital setting that operates at a fast pace and requires consistent attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols. The schedule typically runs Monday through Friday between approximately 5:45 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., with 8-hour varied shifts, along with rotating Saturday shifts from approximately 6:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (3.5 to 4 hours, varied). The position involves frequent interaction with patients, clinical staff, and laboratory personnel, as well as regular use of phlebotomy equipment, centrifuges, and computer systems. The environment emphasizes regulatory compliance, cleanliness, and safe handling of biological specimens, with appropriate clinical attire required in accordance with facility policies.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
