The District Attorney’s Office is seeking a Legal Secretary committed to supporting the criminal justice system and the community it serves! This role offers valuable opportunities to assist in the prosecution of both misdemeanor and felony cases, while working collaboratively with partner agencies such as Probation, the Public Defender’s Office, Nevada County Superior Court, and local law enforcement.

Primary Duties:

Key responsibilities include handling case discovery, filing court documents, preparing subpoenas, and maintaining accurate records within the case management system. The ideal candidate can operate within a digital legal environment, is proficient with technology, and knowledgeable about electronic file formats. A strong understanding of legal terminology, procedures, and administrative practices is critical.

Examples of responsibilities might include, but not limited to:

  • Draft and prepare a range of legal documents, including briefs, motions, petitions, and correspondence

  • Process legal documents and materials in accordance with accurate format, terminology, and procedures

  • Scan, organize, and manage legal records within the case management system

  • Compile and assemble legal materials for attorney use

  • Perform administrative and clerical duties; recommend improvements to workflow, procedures, and systems

  • Provide secretarial support to legal staff

  • Maintain litigation calendars, including tracking court dates, deadlines, and case activities

Education and Experience Required

Minimum Education and Experience Required:

Completion of the twelfth grade and one year of responsi­ble clerical and staff support experience comparable to the level of a Legal Office Assistant II with the County of Nevada. One year of college-level education may be substituted for the required experience.

Level II (in addition to the above): Two years of experience in a legal secretarial assignment equivalent to the County's Legal Secretary I.

Licenses and Certificates:

Retirement

The County is a member of the CalPERS retirement system and also provides the opportunity for voluntary contributions to a 457 deferred compensation account through Nationwide by way of pre-tax and Roth payroll deductions.
