Commander, Navy Installations Recreation Assistant (Lead Lifeguard) in Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida

Summary This position is located at Aquatics, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Department, Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, FL. The purpose of this position is to provide lifeguard duties in a variety of situations and will be responsible for safeguarding the lives of persons at the assigned work area throughout the MWR Department. Tasks may also include a variety of duties in support of MWR such as community events. Responsibilities General (Duties include but are not limited to): Leads and coordinates the daily operations of the pools under the direction and supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor. Responsibilities include the leading of approximately 20 Lifeguards. Advises lifeguards and points out necessary precautions to assume the safety of swimming pool participants. Explains to lifeguards the work requirements, methods and procedures for cleaning the pool, pool areas and locker rooms. When unsafe environmental or health conditions exist, informs Aquatics Supervisor and closes swimming areas until safe conditions return. Refers unusual problems to the Aquatics Supervisor. Recommends equipment/supplies necessary for daily maintenance of related areas. Keeps supervisor informed about assigned activities. May provide lessons to swimmers. Assists with administrative duties involved in the operation of the pool. Assists in arranging parties, keeps schedules and ensures that adequate personnel are scheduled. Reports maintenance problems to the proper parties or to supervisor. Keeps equipment and supplies organized. Conducts training for lifeguards under the direction of the Aquatics Supervisor. Assists in recording attendance, equipment inventories, accidents, incidents, pool parties and other related information. Assists in the evaluation of the swimming pool services and consults with supervisor. Performs other related duties as assigned. Must be familiar with and have basic knowledge of pool chemicals and how they are used, pool equipment and basic operation of a pool. Responsible for the safety of swimmers in the pool. Remain alert and continuously observe swimming area to ensure safety of patrons. Enforce swimming pool rules and regulations, assist swimmers having difficulty and rescue those in trouble. Perform rescue work and when necessary, render first aid until such time as qualified doctor or other emergency personnel are present. In case of a serious accident will call for an ambulance. Prepare complete accident report. Alert supervisor of unusual circumstances. Perform any necessary housekeeping tasks to ensure proper standards of cleanliness, sanitation and appearance of pool and related facilities (vacuuming pool, cleaning deck, etc.) Inspect pool and surrounding area ensuring cleanliness and safety at all times. Check chlorine and PH levels on a scheduled basis. Immediately communicate problems or concerns of the aquatic environment to the aquatics manager. Determine patron eligibility and provides quality customer service to patrons. Answer questions and provides program information to patrons. May assist with scheduled pool parties after hours of operation or with a base wide special event. Maintain daily logs and records. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifying experience must have been equivalent to the next lower level in the normal line of progression. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Knowledge of recreation equipment and use in an aquatics setting. Knowledge of pool and waterfront safety rules. Knowledge of general aquatic facility upkeep and maintenance (e.g., cleaning, minor equipment repairs). Ability to appropriately identify hazards or hazardous situations and identify a patron's need for assistance immediately. Ability to conduct routine safety inspections of the facility and pool area to ensure they meet environmental health standards. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to work with hazardous and biohazardous materials (e.g., cleaning agents, pool chemicals, blood). Skill in providing customer service to a diverse group of people. Skill to act decisively and immediately in any situation which could result in harm to a patron by identifying a patron in distress. Skill to tactfully, but forcefully, provide instruction on water safety, facility rules and regulations, and enforce them. Skill to conduct pool chemical testing, adjust chemical imbalances and document the results. Skill to exercise control over a large group of people. Certifications: American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate or a higher-level equivalent certificate Basic First Aid and CPR Certification At least six (6) months Lifeguard experience Transcripts MUST BE included if selection is education.
