Ford Motor Company Calibration Engineer in Naucalpan de Juarez, Mexico

The Powertrain Calibration Engineer is responsible for the development, testing, validation, and release of propulsion system calibrations across Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) and electrified powertrains (xEV, FHEV, PHEV). This role ensures that vehicle performance, drivability, fuel economy, emissions, and On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) systems meet all corporate, customer, and global regulatory requirements (e.g., CARB, EPA). The engineer manages the coordinated software release process, conducts rigorous testing in specialized laboratory facilities and real-world environments, and acts as a key technical liaison for cross-functional integration, assembly plant support, and continuous quality improvement.

At Ford Motor Company, we believe freedom of movement drives human progress. With our incredible plans for the future of mobility, we have a wide variety of opportunities for you to accelerate your career and help us define tomorrow’s transportation.

  • Calibration Development & Optimization: Plan, develop, and validate calibrations for fuel, spark, air, emissions, after-treatment technologies, and OBD to meet global regulatory and performance standards. Integrate interacting powertrain activities including engine cooling, NVH, shift quality, and thermal management.

  • Testing & Validation: Evaluate and assess vehicle attributes in-vehicle, on engine/chassis dynamometers, and through HIL/SIL virtual testing environments. Design and execute comprehensive Design Verification Plans (DVP&R). Lead vehicle testing and development trips at remote environmental locations (e.g., high altitude, extreme temperatures in Mexico and the US).

  • Software & Release Management: Manage and coordinate the software and calibration release process for powertrain and electrified applications. Lead multi-module meetings to coordinate releases, schedule emergency releases, and manage parts and configurations in corporate systems (e.g., WERS, Firmware Data Bases, IVS).

  • Cross-Functional Integration & Leadership: Lead Powertrain Calibration PMT (Program Module Team) activities, acting as the primary technical interface with Feature Calibration, Controls, Vehicle Integration (VI), and Software teams. Guide software and control system areas in implementing effective engineering solutions and resolving timing issues.

  • Quality & Launch Support: Support Job #1 and post-Job #1 corporate processes, including 8Ds, Stop Ships, and field quality concern resolution. Provide expert technical assistance to manufacturing assembly plants and suppliers. Prepare the Calibration Program Sign-off Book to support key GPDS (Global Product Development System) milestones.

  • Continuous Improvement: Review benchmark data, manage lessons learned, and develop detailed project plans that embrace all elements of control features (drivability, functional safety, common features) to drive continuous cost reduction and quality improvements.

Preferred skills:

  • 2-5+ years of relevant experience in powertrain engineering, calibration development, software release, or vehicle testing.

  • Experience with the automotive product development lifecycle (GPDS milestones) and launch processes.

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with vehicle testing, engine dynamometers, and issue resolution methodologies.

Hard Skills:

  • Powertrain Knowledge: Deep understanding of Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) theory, electrified propulsion systems (EV, HEV), thermodynamics, and advanced after-treatment technologies.

  • Calibration & Data Tools: Proficiency with industry-standard calibration and data acquisition tools (e.g., ETAS INCA, ATI Vision, CANape, dSPACE).

  • Software & Controls: Strong foundation in control systems, electronic networks (CAN, LIN), and programming/scripting (MATLAB/Simulink, Python, C-type languages). Familiarity with software release tools and WERS.

  • Regulatory & Compliance: In-depth knowledge of global emissions and OBD regulatory requirements.

  • Quality Disciplines: Working knowledge of engineering disciplines such as P-Diagrams, DFMEA, DVP&R, and Six Sigma/8D problem-solving methodologies.

Soft Skills:

  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Spanish. Capable of presenting complex technical data clearly to management and cross-functional teams.

  • Problem Solving: A diligent, analytical, and data-driven approach to troubleshooting complex hardware, software, and calibration issues.

  • Adaptability & Initiative: High learning agility with an innovative mindset. Ability to manage multiple complex projects, adapt to fast-paced environments, and master new technologies with minimal supervision.

  • Teamwork & Leadership: Proven ability to foster a strong team environment, manage conflict, and collaborate seamlessly across global teams, suppliers, and manufacturing plants.

  • A valid driver's license and a good driving record are mandatory for conducting in-vehicle development and testing.
