Amazon Senior Structural Engineer, Mechanical Project Execution in Nashville, Tennessee

Description

Amazon is seeking an experienced Senior Structural Engineer to join our Mechanical Project Execution team. This critical role will be responsible for developing comprehensive structural steel permit sets for conveyor support systems across our rapidly expanding network of fulfillment and distribution centers. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in header steel design, connection engineering, platform design and structural analysis for industrial material handling applications.

You will work at the intersection of structural engineering and logistics innovation, designing the structural backbone that supports Amazon's world-class fulfillment operations. This role offers the opportunity to impact projects at scale, with your designs being implemented across multiple facilities nationwide.

Key job responsibilities

Structural Design & Engineering:

Header Steel & Conveyor Support Systems:

Work with PE to develop complete structural steel permit sets for conveyor support systems, including all header steel, drops, bracing, and connection details

Design all structural connections from building ceiling/roof structure to conveyor equipment, ensuring load path integrity and code compliance

Create specialized connection details for unique conditions including seismic zones and retrofit applications

Develop sway bracing systems and establish requirements for conveyor support structures

Design mezzanine platforms and grid structures specific to each building's requirements and equipment layout

Load Analysis & Calculations:

Oversee and perform comprehensive loading calculations for material handling equipment including conveyors, sorters, and automated systems

Develop load combinations incorporating dead loads, live loads, impact factors, seismic forces, and equipment-specific dynamic loads

Trace load paths from equipment through support structure to building foundation

Verify equipment vendor load data and coordinate with manufacturers on structural requirements

Perform structural analysis using RISA and FEA software for complex support systems

Design Standards & Procedures:

Develop and maintain standardized procedures for load development and header steel system design

Create calculation templates and design guidelines for use across multiple projects

Establish connection libraries and typical details to improve design efficiency and consistency

Document design criteria and assumptions for peer review and future reference

Ensure all designs comply with IBC, local building codes and any pertinent structural standards

Collaboration & Coordination

Vendor & Contractor Interface:

Partner with platform vendors and material handling equipment manufacturers to integrate structural requirements with equipment specifications

Collaborate with general contractors and SEOR to review and approve loads imposed to the building

Coordinate with MEP engineers to resolve conflicts and ensure proper clearances for utilities using Autodesk Cloud Construction (ACC)

Attend design coordination meetings and provide technical guidance on structural capacity to project teams

Review and approve vendor shop drawings and connection submittals

Multi-Discipline Coordination:

Work closely with architects, general contractors, and other disciplines to integrate conveyor support systems and platforms

Coordinate with Amazon WWDE and Operations teams to understand equipment requirements and operational constraints

Interface with permitting authorities and respond to plan review comments

Provide technical support to construction teams during installation

Construction Support & Quality Assurance

Construction Administration:

Respond to RFIs (Requests for Information) during construction phases

Conduct site visits to verify installation compliance with design intent

Review contractor shop drawings and submittal packages for structural steel fabricators

Provide field engineering support and design clarifications as needed

Document field conditions and approve design modifications when required

Quality Control:

Perform design checks and peer reviews of structural calculations, permit drawings, installation drawings and BIM integration.

Ensure all deliverables meet Amazon's quality standards and project requirements

Participate in lessons-learned sessions and continuous improvement initiatives

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of specialty (with progressive responsibility) experience

  • Experience using one or more of the following technologies (e.g., AutoCAD, Rhino, Revit, SolidWorks, CREO, SketchUp, KeyShot, etc.) to deliver high quality models and designs

  • Experience in team leadership

  • Knowledge of seismic design and lateral force-resisting systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Structural Engineering

  • Experience in mentoring, leading, or managing more junior engineers

  • Experience developing structural steel permit sets and connection designs

  • Demonstrated expertise in header steel design for conveyor or similar suspended systems

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in at least one US state

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
