Position Description

The Master Technician at General Services performs skilled repair and maintenance work on motor vehicles, heavy and light construction and related equipment. Performs related duties as required.

*This position will be used to fill day and evening shift opportunities.

The men and women in Metro’s General Services Department are there to make sure the rest of government works. From ensuring that our city’s vehicles run safely and smoothly, to keeping city buildings up to par to providing printing services and more, General Services is the support that allows other Metro departments to focus and achieve their missions.

Typical Duties

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serves as shop expert and Master Technician in all areas of servicing and maintenance for motor vehicles, heavy and light construction and other related equipment.

  • Maintains and repairs diesel and/or gasoline motor vehicles and equipment according to manufacturer standards.

  • Inspects and diagnoses various problems.

  • Maintains gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, air conditioning, electrical, and other automotive systems.

  • Repairs or replaces worn or defective parts.

  • Welds and fabricates.

  • Rebuilds pumps, cylinder heads, cable control units, and renew pins and bushings on tracks.

  • Performs tune-ups and emissions test.

  • Provides roadside assistance and emergency repairs out of shop.

  • Road tests vehicles before and after repairs.

  • Performs brake lathe work.

  • Ensures proper service is maintained.

  • Completes work orders and parts requests on every vehicle repaired.

  • Delivers motor vehicles to dealerships for specialized maintenance and warranty repairs.

  • Keeps tools, equipment, and shop area clean and orderly.

  • Acquires parts from stock room staff.

  • Attends seminars and training as needed.

  • Operates a service truck safely.

  • Trains other employees as needed.

  • May lead work of other equipment or automotive shop employees.

  • May be required to serve on call

  • May be required to provide roadside repair support

  • Monitors and ensures accuracy of shop mechanics in repair and maintenance of automobiles and equipment.

EQUIPMENT USED

Pneumatic and Hand Tools, Hydraulic Lifts and Jacks, Welding Equipment, Brake Lathe, Tire Balancer, Hydraulic and Drill Press, Gauges, Diagnostic Equipment, and Related Repair Equipment

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or GED and three (3) years experience repairing motor vehicles and/or equipment, including one (1) year working as Automotive Mechanic – Certified, Equipment Mechanic - Certified or Emergency Vehicle Technician

LICENSES REQUIRED

Must obtain a Class “A” commercial driver’s license with required endorsements within the first twelve (12) months of obtaining the position.

Master of LVS (light duty) does not require the Class “A” license only a Valid Drivers License.

Automotive Mechanic (Light Vehicle Shop):

Certification by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (A.S.E.) as a Master Automotive Technician

Equipment Mechanic (Heavy Vehicle Shop):

Certification by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (A.S.E.) as a Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Employee must furnish proper tools to perform the job.

Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience with the advanced techniques and methods used in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and heavy construction equipment

  • Experience with the tools and equipment used in the servicing of motor vehicles and heavy construction equipment

  • Knowledge of shop environment occupational hazards and preventive safety measures

  • Experience diagnosing and correcting complex or unusual automotive and/or equipment problems
