POSITION SUMMARY:\ The principal function of an employee in this class is a technician with the ability to diagnose, rebuild, modify, or maintain emergency vehicles, autos, trucks, construction equipment, etc. Performs technical automotive and/or heavy truck and equipment maintenance and repair of City vehicles, including emergency, recreation, street, and sanitation vehicles; performs directly related work as required. The work is performed under supervision of the Fleet Services Superintendent and/or the Assistant Fleet Services Superintendent, but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with assigned supervisors, other city employees, and the general public. The principle duties of this class are performed in an automotive repair facility.\ \ ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:\ Uses scanners and various other tools to perform trouble shooting and diagnostic work on city vehicles and equipment, to include diagnosis and repair of engines, transmissions, cooling, electrical, and hydraulic systems.\ Designs, fabricates, and install emergency vehicle lightning systems. Installs communication radios, Wi-Fi units, and antennas, as well as other specialized equipment required by police and fire equipment.\ Tests and repairs fire pumps, valves and controls as necessary.\ Performs regular scheduled maintenance and repair of City vehicles, emergency equipment, construction equipment, and specialized equipment as required.\ Utilizes related tools such as welder, torch, grinders, and drills for fabrication and design.\ Operates tire mounting and balancing machines.\ Inspects, adjusts, and repairs air and hydraulic brake systems, to include the operation of brake lathe, micrometers, and run out gauges.\ Reads and interprets manuals, drawings, electrical schematics and specifications.\ Cleans and maintains shop equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation and use.\ Test drives vehicles when appropriate.\ Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same and similar class of positions.\ Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions, and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principals, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas.\ Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.\ Responds to citizens\' questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.\ Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.\ Is punctual and timely in meeting requirements of performance, including attendance standards and work deadlines.\ Communicates information and states concerns in a clear and professional manner.\ Respects the opinion of others and demonstrates a professional and courteous relationship with employees, supervisors and others.\ Accepts and performs in a timely and effective manner changes in work assignments and/or how work is performed.
