As a Fermentation and Downstream Processing Technician at Thermo Fisher Scientific, you will play a crucial role in advancing biopharmaceutical research and development. Your primary responsibility will be to perform and improve small-scale fermentation, filtration, and chromatography processes for our innovative Capture Select affinity ligands. These ligands are manufactured at our ISO9001 certified facility in Naarden, Netherlands.
In this dynamic role, you will:
Be integral to the production of manufacturing processes in our state-of-the- art manufacturing facility
Engage in the complete workflow, from upstream processes to downstream
Learn and operate cutting-edge technologies for the manufacturing of biological products
Our Capture Select ligands are single- chain antibody fragments, produced through a sophisticated process involving:
Upstream fermentation in yeast
Primary recovery using micro-filtration (MF) and ultra- filtration (UF)
Purification via ion-exchange (IEX) chromatography
These ligands are essential for our customers in the research, development, and manufacturing of groundbreaking biopharmaceuticals. From novel antibody and gene therapies to recombinant proteins, our products contribute to the treatment of life-threatening diseases.
Functions and Key Responsibilities:
Complete cell banking, fermentation and filtration processes according to batch documentation and standard operating procedures
Ensure all operations meet departmental process and quality requirements
Manage the movement and order of materials in ERP to meet project timelines.
Apply knowledge of quality systems (ISO9001) to accurately document results and provide well- reasoned conclusions
Demonstrate proficiency in cGxP requirements and aseptic processing techniques
Write and review manufacturing documentation, development protocols, and reports.
Develop and revise Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Participate in Practical Process Improvement (PPI) projects to drive continuous improvement.
Serve as an equipment owner for one or multiple systems, managing and maintaining operational stability
Collaborate with the maintenance team to identify and resolve technical faults
Provide on-the-job training to new fermentation and primary recovery employees.
Monitor and control factory processes, both on- site and remotely, including outside standard working hours as per consignee schedule
Demonstrate flexibility to work overtime on non-scheduled days to meet business demands
Step in to replace higher-level employees when necessary.
REQUIREMENTS:
Skills and Experience:
Bachelor's degree or MBO4 in biosciences, biotechnology, or bioprocess technology
Minimum of 1- 4 years of relevant work experience
Proven experience in a manufacturing role, ideally within the biotech or pharmaceutical industry.
Fluency in English, both written and verbal
Ability to work effectively in a team and independently
Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Access, Excel, Word)
Demonstrated ability to adapt quickly to changing environments and priorities
Excellent communication and problem- solving skills
Effective training and mentoring skills for new employees.
Strong planning, prioritization, and organizational abilities
Excellent documentation and technical writing skills.
Ability to successfully implement development studies and interpret results.
Flexibility to participate in off-hours schedules as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with both Upstream and Primary Recovery techniques
Knowledge of Dutch language (not essential, but advantageous)
