Intermountain Health Senior Medical Director - Anesthesiology, Surgical Services - System in Murray, Utah

Job Description:

The Senior Medical Director of Anesthesiology, Surgical Operations provides strategic direction, leadership, oversight, and support for the systemwide Intermountain Department of Anesthesiology. This Senior Medical Director develops a culture of highly reliable, best care for patients and communicates effectively with all Anesthesiologists and associated Advanced Practice Clinicians (CRNA's) across the Intermountain system.

This position also partners and collaborates with leaders in Clinical Programs, Operational Lanes, Shared Clinical Services, Shared Support

Services, Research & Academics, Intermountain Foundation, Select Health and other aligned payers as well as the Specialty and

Community Based Care Group and Clinical Services to create a professional and positive environment for patients to receive care and for providers to do their work. This position champions provider growth and development, innovation, and continuous improvement. Importantly, this leader promotes excellence in the fundamentals of extraordinary care by engaging physicians, APPs, and affiliated teams across Intermountain Health in a focus on Safety, Quality, Patient Experience, Access, and Stewardship. This position is responsible to oversee all Anesthesia related components of patient care including preventative medicine, community support networks, collaborations with primary care, pre-admission work up, perioperative care, anesthesia best practice and post-discharge anesthesia care when relevant.

The Senior Medical Director of Anesthesiology, Surgical Operations will work collaboratively with the Associate Chief Medical Officer, Hospitals, Nursing and Operations officers to define, establish, and oversee the work of Surgical Operations, working collaboratively with all disciplines including Clinical Programs, specialty care, community care, shared clinical services, and clinically integrated networks. Provides leadership, oversight and support for the development of a culture of high reliability and the measurement of care, identifying opportunities, building relationships and executing on strategies to drive the performance and measured improvement of all Surgical Operations and perform all needed tasks necessary to provide efficient, high-quality patient care. Responsible in tandem with operations and nursing officers for the administrative, financial and clinical performance of the operating rooms of Intermountain. The Senior Medical Director will assist in maintain an appropriate operating room environment.

This is a system-wide leadership role with key organizational relationships across Intermountain Health with a specific focus on leading the performance and continuous improvement of Anesthesiology and Surgical Services. This position reports to Clinical Shared Services Leadership.

Job Essentials

Lead the Intermountain Department of Anesthesiology

Oversee all Anesthesia related components of patient care across the Intermountain system

Direction and review of Associate Medical Director(s) of Anesthesiology

Medical Direction of Intermountain Anesthesiology Advanced Practice Clinicians (CRNAs)

Medical Direction of Anesthesiology leads from each site

Oversee Anesthesiology subspecialty team(s) and focus workgroup(s)

Work with facility administrators to address site Anesthesia needs

Support and drive progress in key process indicators (KPI) metrics of Surgical Services

Drive excellence and affordability in anesthesia and sedation

Review safety events and perform quality peer reviews

Collaborate and interface with clinical programs to develop and promote best practices

Partner with operational lanes to optimize care interfaces and collaborations

Assists in leading Physician/Advanced practice provider collaborations and defines and establishes care models that best meet our patients’ needs and our system fundamentals.

Ensures that evidence-based clinical care standards for Surgical Services are established and effectively implemented across Intermountain for appropriate caregivers

Responsible for execution of policies and procedures related to operating room environments

Assists in educating compliance with appropriate standards required by all governmental agencies

In partner with leadership, perform scheduled reviews of appropriateness of cases. Concerning behavior addressed as well as communicated to hospital and clinical program leadership

Champions quality initiatives and policies and reports infractions collaborating to eliminate future infractions

Assists in ensuring acceptable patient satisfaction rates

Regular attendance of committee meetings

Assist in quality reporting - Effectively addresses performance concerns for providers, including peer review for cases within Surgical

Maintain standards of Zero Harm

Address inappropriate or unprofessional behavior - Conducts annual performance reviews/conversations for physician leaders.

Address capital needs of the system

Promote employee engagement

Assist in the development and management of operational, financial, and fundamentals of extraordinary care metrics

Collaborate with clinical programs for strategic and best practice development and implementation

Development and implementation of committees related to the needs of Surgical Services including but not limited to utilization, quality, new products, and strategy

Partner with inpatient hospital operations to maximize environment of care

Maintain environment of collegiality with consultants as well as in-patient caregivers

Assists in establishing professional standards for physicians within Intermountain Surgical Services

Assists in ensuring physician and APP alignment for Surgical Services across the Intermountain system

Assists in Developing and implementing committees related to the needs of Surgical Services including but not limited to utilization, quality, new products and strategy

Partnership with SCO for cost savings initiatives

Supports and drives results for the fundamentals of care for Intermountain with concern for reducing the cost of care/per member per month (pmpm) costs, with focus on improving the affordability of healthcare.

Minimum Qualifications

Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree. Education must be obtained through an ACGME or AOA accredited institution, will be verified.

Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers.

ABMS or equivalent AOA Board Certification in a surgical or anesthesia specialty.

Active Medical Licensure, or in the process of obtaining licensure, is required.

At least three years of clinical experience in a surgical or anesthesia service practice setting.

Three years of experience leading successful improvement in clinical settings.

Three years of progressive healthcare leadership experience.

Experience with change management with the ability to provide leadership in the adaptation and implementation of new processes and /or technology that enhance safety.

Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, Public Health or other business- related field.

Trained in improvement science (i.e., Six Sigma, Lean, Project management, Advanced Training Program)

Experience working in a complex health system (hospitals, ambulatory clinics, post-acute care, etc.).

Demonstrated leadership of clinicians.

Certified in healthcare communication, coaching or an equivalent experience with external entities that drive and support Experience of Care approaches and standards, including government agencies, academic institutions, universities and related organizations of higher education, and other public institutions.

Physical Requirements

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.

$7.25 - $999.99
