Brief Description of Duties:

SUNY Morrisville is seeking a Janitor. Janitors perform a wide range of custodial and cleaning tasks to maintain assigned areas in State buildings, and surrounding grounds and walkways. Incumbents work independently or as part of a cleaning team in a variety of settings, such as administrative offices, classrooms, laboratories, residence halls, and other work areas.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Performs a variety of custodial and cleaning tasks in assigned areas.

  • Collects and empties trash and recycling in accordance with cleaning schedules; cleans and/or removes hazardous or misplaced items, waste, and spills; disposes, transports, or places such items in appropriate receptacles and locations, following proper cleaning procedures.

  • Assembles cleaning carts according to assigned tasks; prepares, mixes, and dilutes cleaning solutions following manufacturer directions.

  • Washes floors, corridors, stairwells, walls, partitions, and windows using mops, detergents, brushes, and other cleaning devices.

  • Vacuums, strips and waxes floors, and shampoos carpets, using manual or mechanical equipment.

  • Scrubs and cleans showers and restrooms, including toilets, sinks, and drains, using hand-operated equipment and cleaning agents.

  • Replaces light bulbs, and dusts or washes light fixtures and high places, such as ceilings, using ladders, other appropriate equipment, and tools.

  • Polishes wood and metal surfaces, fixtures, furniture, and equipment.

  • Monitors cleaning supplies and equipment; notifies supervisor of supply levels, equipment malfunction, and/or maintenance issues observed during cleaning.

  • Replaces, cleans, and/or hangs building fixtures and decorative items, such as curtains, blinds, and pictures.

  • Moves and arranges furniture and equipment in connection with cleaning tasks or in preparation for meetings, events, and other activities.

  • May be required to follow specialized disinfectant, waste disposal, and cleanliness standards in performing cleaning tasks; remove snow and salt walkways; clean sidewalks, drives, and grounds; mow lawns using mechanical and manual equipment; perform routine laundry tasks; and change bed linens.

    Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must possess a valid New York State driver's license.

  • Janitors must be physically able to perform the tasks of the position and understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
