Job Title: Assistant Project Manager – Civil ConstructionJob Description
The Assistant Project Manager supports the full lifecycle of civil construction projects, including site development, utilities, earthwork, and roadway/heavy civil work across private, commercial, and public-sector projects in North Carolina and surrounding regions. In this role, you work closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, estimators, subcontractors, and vendors to help ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in full compliance with contract documents and regulations. You play a key role in project coordination, cost tracking, documentation, and field support, contributing directly to the successful execution of complex civil construction projects.
Responsibilities
Assist the Project Manager with day-to-day management of active projects from kickoff through closeout.
Support the development, tracking, and updating of project budgets, schedules, and cost forecasts.
Coordinate with Superintendents on production tracking, manpower planning, material deliveries, and daily jobsite activities.
Help monitor project progress and identify potential schedule or cost impacts, escalating issues as needed.
Assist with job cost tracking, cost-to-complete updates, and monthly financial forecasting.
Review and code invoices, subcontractor pay applications, and material tickets accurately and on time.
Track change orders, including gathering pricing support, preparing documentation, and managing approval routing.
Support buyout activities and assist with subcontractor and vendor procurement.
Help manage subcontractor contracts, insurance compliance, and scopes of work.
Coordinate subcontractor scheduling and help resolve scope gaps or overlaps between trades.
Participate in subcontractor meetings and jobsite coordination efforts to support smooth field operations.
Assist with preparation and maintenance of project documentation such as RFIs, submittals, meeting minutes, change order logs, and cost reports.
Maintain organized project files in accordance with company standards and procedures.
Support preparation of owner and client reports as well as internal project updates.
Review plans, specifications, and project scopes during turnover from estimating to operations.
Assist with quantity reviews and validation of earthwork modeling to support accurate field planning.
Use takeoff and estimating data to support change order pricing and field decision-making.
Support enforcement of project safety plans and company safety standards on all assigned projects.
Assist with jobsite safety meetings, safety documentation, and compliance tracking.
Help ensure project activities comply with contract requirements and applicable regulations.
Collaborate with field crews, office staff, subcontractors, and vendors to promote effective communication and problem-solving.
Demonstrate accountability, professionalism, and strong follow-through on assigned tasks and commitments.
Essential Skills
At least 2 years of experience in civil construction as an Assistant Project Manager, Project Engineer, or similar role.
Strong understanding of civil construction operations including sitework, utilities, grading, and roadway work.
Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and contracts.
Hands-on experience with HCSS software (HeavyJob, HCSS Suite, or related project management and cost tracking tools).
Experience with earthwork takeoffs, model review, or mass haul analysis.
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel for project tracking, cost analysis, and reporting.
Proficiency with digital document tools such as Bluebeam for plan review and markup.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Effective verbal and written communication skills for interacting with field crews, subcontractors, and project teams.
Demonstrated project management and project coordination abilities in a construction environment.
Experience preparing and managing RFIs and change orders in civil construction projects.
Ability to support site development and civil site construction activities with attention to detail.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
4 or more years of civil construction experience is preferred.
Experience supporting DOT or municipal projects is highly desirable.
Background in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or equivalent field experience.
Experience transitioning estimates into active project budgets and production plans.
Strong attention to detail and consistent follow-through on tasks.
Cost awareness and sensitivity to schedule impacts in project decision-making.
Collaborative mindset with both field and office teams.
Problem-solving skills and adaptability in fast-paced project environments.
High level of accountability and professionalism in all interactions.
Demonstrated ability to work hard and maintain a strong work ethic.
Work Environment
The role operates within a civil construction environment focused on site development, utilities, earthwork, and roadway/heavy civil projects across private, commercial, and public-sector work in North Carolina and nearby regions. You split your time between the office and active jobsites, collaborating closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, estimators, subcontractors, and vendors. The position relies heavily on digital tools such as HCSS (HeavyJob, HCSS Suite or similar), Microsoft Excel, Bluebeam, and other project documentation systems for cost tracking, scheduling, and reporting. Jobsite visits may involve exposure to outdoor conditions, active heavy equipment, and varying weather, with a strong emphasis on safety practices and adherence to project safety plans. The work pace is fast and deadline-driven, with multiple concurrent projects and priorities, and a culture that values collaboration, accountability, and professional communication.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $36.00/hr.
