Job Title: PLC Technician

Job Description

The PLC Technician responds quickly to production breakdowns and ensures that complex packaging and confectionery equipment operates safely, efficiently, and reliably. This role combines hands-on mechanical and electrical maintenance, PLC troubleshooting, and equipment repair in a clean, climate-controlled manufacturing environment on a 12-hour night shift schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Respond rapidly to all production breakdowns with a strong sense of urgency to minimize downtime and maintain production flow.

  • Install, maintain, and repair a wide range of machinery, including candy forming machines, high-speed twist, pillow and roll wrapping machines, vertical and horizontal bagging machines, overwrap packaging machines, confectionery cooking and tempering machines, pumps, gearboxes, conveyors, and pick-and-place packaging equipment.

  • Interpret and work from blueprints, sketches, and other technical specifications to perform accurate installations and repairs.

  • Troubleshoot and repair vacuum, centrifugal, diaphragm, gear, and reciprocating pumps to ensure reliable operation.

  • Perform repairs and adjustments on motors, controls, electric tools, and other electrical equipment used in the production process.

  • Use basic welding and pipefitting skills to support equipment installation, modification, and repair.

  • Perform mechanical troubleshooting on production and packaging equipment to identify root causes and implement effective solutions.

  • Perform electrical troubleshooting on equipment and systems, including components related to PLC-controlled machinery.

  • Troubleshoot PLC-controlled equipment to support efficient and reliable operation of automated systems.

  • Work effectively as part of a team, collaborating with other technicians, operators, and production staff to prioritize and complete maintenance tasks.

  • Handle multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high standards of safety and quality.

  • Follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP/cGMP) and FDA-related standards to maintain compliance and product quality.

  • Maintain and use a personal quality set of standard and metric mechanic’s tools to perform daily maintenance and repair tasks.

  • Adhere to all safety policies, including the use of required personal protective equipment and safe work practices.

Essential Skills

  • Hands-on experience as a maintenance technician working with production and packaging equipment.

  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting skills for complex machinery such as wrapping, bagging, overwrap packaging, and confectionery processing equipment.

  • Strong electrical troubleshooting skills for motors, controls, electric tools, and production equipment.

  • Ability to troubleshoot PLC-controlled equipment and support PLC-related issues.

  • Experience working with mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems in an industrial or manufacturing environment.

  • Ability to interpret blueprints, sketches, and technical specifications.

  • Basic welding and pipefitting skills sufficient to support equipment installation and repair.

  • Knowledge and application of GMP and FDA requirements in a production environment.

  • Ability to work 12-hour night shifts (7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.) on a 2 on, 2 off, 3 on rotating schedule, including every other weekend, and openness to applicable night shift differentials.

  • Ability to work effectively as a team player and handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced setting.

  • Must supply a quality set of standard and metric mechanic’s tools.

  • High school diploma or GED.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Certificates in electrical or mechanical schooling are highly desirable.

  • An Associate’s degree in a related technical field is a plus.

  • Experience maintaining and repairing packaging equipment in a regulated environment is beneficial.

  • Familiarity with cGMP standards and FDA-regulated manufacturing is an advantage.

  • Previous experience working with PLC troubleshooting in a manufacturing or packaging environment is preferred.

Work Environment

The role is based in a very clean, climate-controlled manufacturing facility focused on confectionery and packaging operations. Work is performed on a 12-hour night shift (7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.) on a rotating 2 on, 2 off, 3 on schedule, which includes working every other weekend and eligibility for a night shift differential. The environment emphasizes safety and compliance, requiring steel-toe footwear, safety glasses, ear plugs, and a hair net while on the production floor. Employees work around automated packaging and processing equipment, pumps, conveyors, and PLC-controlled systems, following GMP and FDA-related standards in a structured and well-organized setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Mooresville, NC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $35.00/hr.
