Preferred Qualifications:
One year of post-licensure clinical nursing experience.
Experience with the geriatric population in a long-term care setting. Experience with serving the Veteran population.
Responsibilities/Duties:
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides nursing care activities to residents of the Home under the direction and supervision of the Director of Nursing and Nurse Supervisor. Using detailed standard procedures and as directed by physician and/or registered nurses, they treat residents for a variety of maladies to assist in maintaining resident health, preventing, and curing illness and injury, and alleviating suffering. LPNs also observe residents through the duration of their treatment to obtain information on the physician conditions of such residents.
• Reports to work on time, in uniform with identification. Adheres to schedule, and call-in policy. Maintains an accurate time sheet and submits timely to supervisor.
• Observes residents, identifies symptoms of maladies and changes in conditions manifested by residents, and reports such symptoms of changes to a physician or RN to provide information useful in diagnosis and treatment planning.
• Takes temperatures, pulse rates, blood pressures and respiration rates using appropriate instruments, and knowledge of standard procedures to provide accurate data for interpretation.
• Requests residents to provide and assists residents in collect specimens (i.e., urine, stool) to obtain such samples for analysis.
• Measures fluid intake and output.
• Prepares and maintains charts and other records of residents’ conditions and treatments administered in order to document such conditions and activities.
• Speaks with residents, listens to their replies, and reports their responses in order to obtain and provide information useful in diagnosis and treatment.
• Changes dressings on wounds or other injuries as prescribed in order to keep such injuries clean and protected.
• Gives enemas and douches as directed.
• Administers medications to residents, including intramuscular and subcutaneous injections and
oral and topical medications as prescribed
• Monitors IV bottles and tubing.
• Sets up and operates equipment and apparatus including Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing Machines in the administration of inhalation therapy treatments as prescribed by a physician.
• Feeds residents requiring assistance to ensure such residents receive appropriate nourishment.
• Bathes and dresses residents, brushes teeth, and trims finger and toenails in order to make residents more comfortable.
• Moves, positions, lifts, and transports residents in order to make them more comfortable and to deliver them to appropriate treatment facilities.
• Provides urinals and bedpans bedside as needed to assist residents.
• Speaks with residents, listens to their complaints, and responds by encouraging them to cooperate with and participate in treatment and therapeutic activities to help residents achieve attitudes conducive to treatment and rehabilitation.
• Inventories current supplies to determine the need for ordering new supplies.
• Fills out requisition forms and forwards to appropriate points to maintain supplies at appropriate levels.
• Changes bed linens and other linens to ensure that clean linens are always available for residents, and resident care.
• May assist other personnel in performing a variety of cleaning tasks to maintain the facility in a clean and sanitary state.
• May assist with the washing and dressing of corpses using standard procedures to prepare the corpse for delivery to mortuary facilities.
• Attends mandatory educational programs.
• Is knowledgeable in fire and disaster preparedness procedures.
• Adheres to established attendance policies and procedures.
