Job Title: CNC Set-up Machinist

Job Description

The CNC Set-up Machinist sets up and operates CNC mills and lathes to produce high-quality parts to precise specifications. This role interprets engineering drawings, selects and sets up tooling and work holding, edits CNC programs at the machine, and verifies part quality using precision measuring tools. The machinist supports operators on the line, troubleshoots machining issues, and continuously improves setup efficiency, cycle times, and overall quality while maintaining a safe, clean, and collaborative work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Follow all applicable environmental, health, and safety rules and procedures, and immediately report any dangerous situations, near-misses, or injuries.

  • Participate in developing and updating risk assessments and review all applicable risk assessments on an annual basis.

  • Read and interpret drawings and prints for each assigned job, including size, tolerance, and finish requirements for the operation being set up.

  • Set up and operate CNC equipment safely and efficiently, including mills and lathes, to produce parts that meet specification.

  • Use micrometers, calipers, height gauges, depth gauges, and other precision measuring devices to verify that parts meet quality requirements.

  • Apply knowledge of basic G and M codes to read, understand, and edit CNC machine programs directly at the machine.

  • Use basic computer skills to upload and download machine programs as required for production.

  • Demonstrate and explain the complete machining process to operators, including loading, machining, unloading, deburring, and any additional steps needed to complete the operation.

  • Support machine operators by addressing issues during the machining process, including adjusting for tool wear and replacing dull or broken tools.

  • Enter accurate production information into the production tracking system using a computer or other designated interface.

  • Complete all required paperwork for each operation, such as setup sheets and serial number tracking sheets, to ensure operators can assume responsibility for running the equipment.

  • Maintain a clean, neat, and orderly work area to support a safe and efficient work environment.

  • Continuously seek ways to improve workstation performance by reducing part-to-part times, increasing production efficiency, and decreasing setup times through improved fixtures, work holding, and tooling.

  • Consistently work to improve quality at all levels of the machining and setup process.

  • Communicate professionally and respectfully with all team members in the plant, using translation support when needed to communicate with non-English-speaking employees.

  • Follow directions from supervisors and designated management representatives and collaborate effectively with the broader production team.

  • Work overtime as required to meet production schedules and customer demands.

Essential Skills

  • Advanced CNC machining skills, including work holding, tooling, setup, fixture and tool offsets, and program editing.

  • Ability to hold close tolerances consistently as required by engineering drawings.

  • Proficiency in reading and understanding manufacturing and assembly drawings and blueprints.

  • Hands-on experience setting up and operating CNC mills and CNC lathes.

  • Ability to use precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, height gauges, depth gauges, and other quality control instruments.

  • Working knowledge of G and M codes with the ability to read, understand, and edit CNC machine programs.

  • Basic computer skills to upload and download CNC programs and enter production data into tracking systems.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with supervisors, operators, and team members.

  • Physical ability to lift up to 70 pounds on a regular basis, as often as ten times per hour.

  • Ability to work productively in a non-air-conditioned manufacturing environment for a minimum of eight hours per day.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with HAAS CNC machinery.

  • Experience with Okuma machinery.

  • Familiarity with Fanuc controls.

  • Understanding and application of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).

  • Experience with vertical lathes.

  • Exposure to or experience with Mastercam for programming or toolpath generation.

  • Exposure to or experience with SolidWorks for interpreting or reviewing models and drawings.

  • Demonstrated ability to instruct and mentor operators on machining processes, part handling, and deburring.

  • Ability to use or quickly learn production tracking and data entry systems.

  • Strong focus on continuous improvement in setup efficiency, tooling, and quality.

Work Environment

This role is based in a non-air-conditioned manufacturing plant operating Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with overtime available as needed. You will work around CNC mills and lathes, including equipment such as HAAS and Okuma machines, and use precision measuring tools and computer-based production tracking systems. The environment is hands-on and fast-paced, with a strong emphasis on safety, cleanliness, and organization in each workstation.

This is a Permanent position based out of Trenton, NJ.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $52000.00 - $72800.00/yr.
