BIOLOGIST 1-3 POINTE-AUX-CHENES WMA/ COASTAL LAFAYETTE REGION

This position is a Wildlife and Fisheries Biologist 1-3 Career Progression Group position based at Pointe-aux-Chenes Wildlife Management Area (WMA) that receives direct supervision from a Biologist Supervisor. This position is responsible for the proper management of Pointe-aux-Chenes, Lake Boeuf, Salvador, Timken and Pass-a-Loutre WMAs and Queen Bess Refuge. Duties involve assisting with the daily operations such as maintaining facilities, equipment and grounds.

These WMAs and refuge are highly dynamic coastal environments that provide habitat for a large diversity and abundance of resident and migratory wildlife. These areas are located in Terrebonne, Lafourche, St. Charles, Jefferson and Plaquemines Parishes and consist of habitats ranging from swamp to brackish habitats.

Responsibilities of this position also include conducting field surveys, research projects, habitat development, user surveys, harvest surveys, and other techniques utilized in wildlife management. Other duties consist of assisting in oil and natural gas environmental regulation investigations and providing assistance to users of the WMAs and refuge. Additionally, the incumbent will be required, as needed, to respond to nuisance or injured wildlife calls, which often require after hours and weekend work. The incumbent may also be required to participate in aerial waterfowl surveys. The incumbent may also provide technical assistance to private landowners. The selected candidate will indirectly supervise multiple Technicians and one Technician Supervisor. Overnight travel for multiple days at remote areas and throughout Louisiana will be required. Working in the field, out of boats, at night and in inclement weather will also be required.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries, animal science, forestry, or natural resources.

Job Duties and Other Information

JOB DUTIES

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate habitat management, restoration, research, and enhancement projects across coastal Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) and refuges.

  • Oversee daily land stewardship activities, including food plot and vegetation plantings, prescribed burning, invasive/nuisance species control, and wildlife habitat improvement.

  • Operate, inspect, and maintain water management systems (e.g., pumps, levees, stop-log structures, flap gates, sluice gates) in accordance with approved water management plans.

  • Monitor and assess wetland management, restoration, and research initiatives; provide technical recommendations to supervisory staff on program development and policy improvements.

  • Manage and support wildlife and fisheries programs, including data collection (hunter bag checks, water level and salinity monitoring), managed hunts, trapping, banding, and species-specific initiatives (alligators, waterfowl, furbearers, non-game, and threatened/endangered species).

  • Coordinate and monitor external projects on WMAs/refuges, including oil and gas activities, seismic exploration, dredging operations, and required restoration efforts.

  • Prepare technical reports, correspondence, inventory documentation, and equipment logs; assist with procurement, contract oversight, infrastructure monitoring, and policy recommendations.

  • Collaborate with supervisors, technicians, university researchers, and agency partners to support biological studies, environmental monitoring, and property boundary management.

  • Coordinate maintenance, repair, and construction of facilities and equipment, including roads, trails, water control structures, vessels, tractors, UTVs, and other field assets.

  • Engage with the public, civic organizations, researchers, and partner agencies through outreach events, public forums, and educational presentations; represent the Department and provide resource management information as needed.
