POSITION TITLE
Code Enforcement/Community Service Officer
ANNOUNCEMENT
The Monte Vista Police Department is accepting applications for the position of Community Service Officer/Code Enforcement Officer.
This is a civilian, non-sworn public safety position responsible for assisting the Police Department in maintaining community safety, quality of life, and compliance with municipal ordinances.
The Community Service Officer/Code Enforcement Officer works closely with the Monte Vista Police Department, Community Development Department, and Public Works Department to identify, investigate, and resolve violations of City ordinances while promoting voluntary compliance through education and community engagement.
This position requires regular interaction with the public, independent field work, and the ability to manage sensitive situations with professionalism, sound judgment, and strong communication skills.
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the general direction of a Chief of Police or his designee, the Community Service Officer/Code Enforcement Officer performs civilian public safety duties focused on ordinance enforcement, community engagement, and support to sworn law enforcement personnel.
The position is responsible for identifying and addressing violations of municipal ordinances, assisting with animal control services, documenting enforcement actions, and providing support on non-criminal calls for service.
This position plays an important role in helping maintain the safety, appearance, and livability of the City of Monte Vista.
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The Community Service Officer/Code Enforcement Officer position supports the mission of the Monte Vista Police Department by promoting community safety, improving ordinance compliance, and assisting sworn personnel with non-criminal public safety matters.
Responsibilities include:
• Identifying and investigating violations of municipal ordinances
• Educating residents and businesses regarding ordinance compliance
• Performing animal control services
• Supporting community engagement and outreach programs
• Preparing reports and documentation related to enforcement activities
• Assisting sworn officers with non-criminal calls for service
This position supports the department's commitment to community-oriented policing and proactive problem solving.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
The successful candidate will perform civilian public safety duties including code enforcement, community outreach, and support services for the Monte Vista Police Department.
Typical responsibilities include:
• Patrol within city limits to identify potential ordinance violations
• Investigate complaints related to municipal code violations
• Issue warnings, notices of violation, or summons when appropriate
• Perform animal control duties including response to stray or injured animals
• Maintain records and prepare reports related to enforcement activities
• Provide assistance to sworn personnel on non-criminal calls for service
• Participate in community outreach programs and public safety initiatives
The position typically works forty (40) hours per week, though schedules may vary depending on departmental needs.
Work schedules and assignments are determined by the Chief of Police or designee.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:
• Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age
• Must possess a High School Diploma or GED
• Must be a United States citizen at the time of appl cation
• Must possess a valid driver's license and obtain a valid Colorado driver's license upon hire
• Must successfully pass required background screening and pre-employment drug testing

COMPENSATION AND STATUS
Starting Pay Range: $19.30 -- $26.07 per hour (DOE)
Employment Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
