Location: Monroeville, Pennsylvania  Job Title: Unit Manager -- Engineering (Materials and Welding)  Status: Full-time Manager Annual Salary Range: $122,300 - $203,500 *Salary commensurate with education and experience.

Job Summary

As a Unit Manager, Engineering (Material and Welding) at BPMI, you will lead a high-performing team in applying engineering principles in design, analysis, testing, troubleshooting, and problem resolution, while ensuring compliance with technical standards for naval nuclear propulsion plant and servicing components.  You will drive innovation by developing and implementing new materials and welding technologies that advance capabilities and align with strategic objectives.

Essential Duties:

  • Lead and oversee the execution of technical work, ensuring adherence to engineering and scientific principles related to materials and welding support, failure analysis, technical consultation and guidance of propulsion plant and servicing components.
  • Lead and coordinate team efforts to complete engineering and scientific tasks, analyses, and projects focused on materials and welding applications in the fabrication of plant equipment, pressure vessels, or servicing equipment.
  • Build strong, constructive relationships by collaborating with BPMI colleagues, suppliers, laboratories, shipyards and the NNPP representatives (e.g., NAVSEA, ANSTR, NRLFO) to provide effective technical support for NNPP components.
  • Ensure compliance with technical standards and specifications, quality assurance protocols, and program requirements through accurate documentation and rigorous evaluation of supplier submittals or internally developed content for technical adequacy.
  • Provide technical leadership by guiding the development and implementation of new materials and welding technologies aligned with the company's strategic goals, leveraging continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Deliver clear, concise summaries of work progress, technical details, and issues to senior leadership while driving collaboration and ensuring alignment across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Foster team growth and capability by providing continuous performance feedback, mentorship, coaching, and professional development opportunities while balancing workload demands across the team.
  • Define team responsibilities, delegate tasks effectively, and hold team members accountable for delivering high-quality technical work in alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Represent BPMI at technical meetings with suppliers, other prime contractors, laboratories, shipyards, and NNPP representatives, ensuring alignment with technical and strategic priorities.
  • Establish and maintain the team's annual budget, analyzing and reporting key metrics to monitor and improve performance.
  • Ensure adherence to NNPP guidance regarding the effective classification, security, and documentation of technical efforts within the team.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • BS degree in related technical field (e.g., Materials, Welding, etc.) or B.S. degree in another engineering discipline with a M.S. in related technical field (e.g., Materials, Welding, etc.) from an accredited university.
  • Six (6) years of related technical work experience. Advanced degrees (e.g., Master's, Ph. D.) may be considered as a partial substitute for required experience, depending on the relevance to the position, but may not fulfill the entire experience requirement.
  • Requires a security clearance; however, all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy security clearance is required.

Preferred Job Requirements:

  • Five (5) years minimum of NNPP experience. 
  • Demonstrated project management and leadership skills in handling multiple materials and/or welding engineering projects of increasing complexity and responsibility.
  • Demonstrated creative problem solving and influential decision-making skills, with a focus on driving innovative solutions.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to articulate technically complex information to a spectrum of stakeholders and influence project direction.
  • Direct working knowledge of commercial and military materials/welding specifications and standards.
  • Proven ability to foster continuous improvement, identifying opportunities to refine processes, add value, and enhance team performance by building upon existing technical and operational infrastructure.
