Moab Valley Fire Protection District Wildland Engine Boss in MOAB, Utah

Pay Range:  $27-$35/hour depending on experience and qualifications plus overtime when deployed.  Base pay and wage range are subject to annual increase upon successful return for subsequent fire seasons. 

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

Under the direction and guidance of the Wildland Division Chief, the Engine Boss can expect to provide initial and extended attack on incidents within the Moab Fire Department District, and respond as an additional resource to wildfires and all hazard incidents nationwide.  The Engine Boss should be prepared to be deployed for extended periods of 7 to 21 days.  The Engine Boss will be assigned a crew of seasonal firefighters and will be responsible for providing day to day leadership and supervision of crew. 

 

The Engine Boss is expected to be an effective leader, both on and off the fireline.  Qualities should include good communication, mutual respect, independent decision making, and high level of professionalism.  The Engine Boss is expected to lead the crew in daily physical and technical training designed to enhance employee performance, safety and productivity. 

The Engine Boss and crew will work a normal 40-hour workweek while not on deployment during which time they will participate in various mitigation projects creating defensible space within the jurisdiction requiring chainsaw work, chipping and pile burning.  Crew members will also assist with daily fire department work priorities and other duties as assigned. 

The Engine Boss responsibilities may involve performing hazardous tasks requiring strenuous physical exertion for extended periods of time in hot, smoky conditions with limited visibility.

Seasonal wildland crews will be employed for an estimated period of 6 months from official start date.  This may be extended based on the wildfire activity level and project needs.
