National Park Service Field Unit Local Hire - Maintenance Worker (Seasonal) in Moab, Utah

Summary This Maintenance Worker positions is located at Canyonlands National Park (U.S. National Park Service) in Moab, Utah. Responsibilities These summer seasonal positions perform recurring building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties to assist journeymen and other higher graded maintenance workers. You will perform a minimum of two of the following trades: Carpentry Painting Plumbing Roofing Electrical Cement Finishing Masonry Wastewater Plant Operator Water Plant Operator You will receive work orally or through work orders. The instructions are of a general nature, supplemented by your knowledge and understanding of the trade. You are responsible for detailed layout, selection of tools and materials and for accuracy, completeness and adherence to standards. Assigned tasks are performed independently, with no technical assistance. Finished work is checked for adequacy by supervisor. Physical Effort: Physical effort is heavy to moderate, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions. Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects. Canyonlands National Park preserves a wilderness of rock at the heart of the Colorado Plateau. Water and gravity have been prime architects of this land, cutting flat layers of sedimentary rock into hundreds of canyons, mesa, buttes, fins, arches, and spires. At center stage are two canyons carved by the Green and Colorado Rivers. Based on the topography of these two canyons, Canyonlands is divided into three districts: Island in the Sky, the Needles, and the Maze. The closet town to Island in the Sky is Moab, which is 35 miles away. The closest town to Needles is Monticello, which is 50 miles away, and Moab is 75 miles. The closest town to the Maze is, well there just isn't any. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. You may be required to travel overnight away from home occasionally. Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability to do the work of the position, in more than one of the trades listed in the duties, without more than normal supervision. Experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the full range of Maintenance Worker tasks in at least two of the following trades; Carpentry, Painting, Plumbing, Roofing, Electrical, Cement Finishing, Masonry, Wastewater Plant Operator, Water Plant Operator.(SCREEN OUT) Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic). Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading). Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment. Knowledge of Materials. Additional Information This position will be filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority. Eligibility is limited to applicants who reside within the defined local commuting area at the time of application. For this announcement, the local commuting area is the area from which individuals can reasonably commute to the duty station under normal conditions. The defined vicinity for this position is within a 120-mile radius of Moab, Utah. Residency will be verified during the hiring process.
