Burns & McDonnell Mechanical Department Manager - Upper Midwest Region (Minneapolis) in Minneapolis/St Paul, Minnesota

A Brief Overview

As the Mechanical Department Manager, you will lead a high-performing, cross-practice team representing both the Aviation & Federal and Global Facilities divisions across the Upper Midwest region. From major aviation hubs to secure federal environments to sophisticated commercial and industrial facilities, your team will design and deliver systems that are critical to keep essential operations running efficiently.

This role requires more than management oversight. It calls for a builder of teams, of client trust, of technical rigor, and of profitable growth. You will operate at the intersection of strategy, technical excellence, and people leadership, with a focus on three key areas:

  • Team Leadership & Development: Guide the career growth and performance of a dedicated engineering team. You will be responsible for recruitment, training, development, and retention, ensuring your team has the direction and support to excel.

  • Business Growth & Strategy: Drive the department's profitable growth. This includes managing staff allocation, overseeing project requirements, ensuring billable goals are met, and representing the department in strategic discussions by preparing and presenting financial and workload reports to senior leadership.

  • Operational & Technical Excellence: Provide strong technical guidance and maintain rigorous quality standards for all projects. You will manage the department's budget, oversee the QA/QC process, and uphold company and site safety policies throughout every stage of project delivery.

What You Will Do

  • Provide leadership to the team; direct and coordinate work assignments and review performance to confirm the efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.

  • Be responsible for the profitable growth of the department by confirming staff levels, staff loading, and staff assignments meet project requirements while maintaining billable goals.

  • Implement, apply, and support company, global practice, and/or regional office programs and initiatives; successfully navigate and manage change within the section.

  • Provide expert-level technical and design guidance and support.

  • Achieve stated targets and standards for financial performance.

  • Manage departmental budget and expenses.

  • Prepare and present workload and monthly financial reports to the global practice or regional management and applicable project managers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, construction, or a related field from an accredited program, with a minimum of 7 years of related professional experience in design and/or project management required; 10–15 years preferred.

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited program and a minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience in the design of generation and distribution for mechanical utility systems preferred.

  • Professional Engineering licensure in the Mechanical discipline preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience in the leadership and/or management of engineering teams highly preferred.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.

  • Ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and manage change.

  • Strong project management skills and a strategic perspective.

  • Proficiency in computer software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Compensation

$140,000.00-340,000.00 Yearly

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
