Job Overview
The Receptionist is responsible for greeting customers, providing information, communicating with departments. Performs various clerical duties such as answering telephones, recording messages, preparing schedules, copying materials, typing, filing, and other duties as assigned.
This position is located on the Riverside/West Bank of the University of Minnesota.
The typical schedule will vary from week to week but will generally be either 4 or 8 hour shifts / Monday through Friday.
Shifts range between 5:00 am to 7:30 pm. Shift assignments are set typically 2-6 weeks out
Required Qualifications
- 1 or more years of experience in customer service
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in a health care setting and experience with office equipment
50 WPM
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel
Within the Department of Perioperative Services, the Surgery Lounge Receptionist creates a welcoming, friendly, and informative atmosphere in the Adult and Pediatric Surgery Waiting Lounges. This position is responsible for directing and supporting patients and families throughout the perioperative period and assisting with the delivery of clear and timely patient, family and perioperative staff communications. Receptionists ensure families and friends of patients have a resource for assistance with a variety of needs and assist the surgical team in communicating information and updates during surgical procedures.
Provides a welcoming and supportive environment to families in the Surgery Lounge
Greets patients and visitors when they enter the surgery area and direct the admitting process
Updates family and friends on patient’s status in the surgery process
Coordinates communication between the physician, the clinical staff and the patient’s family through the surgery process
Keeps the surgery lounge supplies updated and available
Makes rounds throughout the day seeking to proactively assist visitors by answering questions and providing information, education and resources as needed during the family's time in Periop
Demonstrates respect for others and conducts self in calm, purposeful and professional manner
Demonstrates and has knowledge of principles of growth and development skills necessary to successfully accomplish job requirements, including age specific competencies where appropriate.
Respects the confidentiality of all information by sharing information only with those who need to know.
Understand and follows safety procedures specifically related to job duties. Demonstrate functional knowledge of emergency plans and utilize proper infection control techniques.
Communicates verbal and written information in a clear, concise, accurate, and timely manner appropriate to patient/family needs.
Demonstrates ability to provide care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level and cultural differences of population served.
Continuously works to improve skills and interpersonal relationships and contributes to a safe work environment.
Continuously creates an exceptional experience with patients, families, providers and peers.
Completes all initial and annual required learning relevant to the role.
Is punctual and complies with department standards regarding attendance and punctuality.
Uses time effectively and actively participates in unit productivity and quality improvement initiatives of department.
Complies with all relevant laws, regulations, and policies. Complies with all Fairview and departmental standards, policies and procedures.
