Metro Transit is one of the country's largest transit systems, employs more than 3,000 people, and provides ridership through an integrated network of buses and light rail, as well as resources for those who carpool, vanpool, walk, or bike in the Twin Cities.

Metro Transit's Engineering Departmentis responsible for the development and construction of Metro Transit's public and support facilities. In the support facility area, they plan, design, and construct improvements to the bus operations and maintenance facilities including, for example, replacement of existing equipment, improvements to the maintenance service bays, renovating operations support space, including building additions, and designing new facilities. Engineering and Facilities has built and maintains over 2 million square feet of office and industrial space.

How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region:The Project Coordinator will be a significant contributor to the work group and the Engineering Department. This position will require an incumbent with broad understanding of sustainability, natural systems, GHG data acquisition and reporting, and environmental justice. The responsible for developing innovative approaches to gather, analyze, and report data that supports the sustainability initiatives of Metro Transit and the Metropolitan Council. The functional areas include Utility Billing and Account Management, Greenhouse Gas Emissions calculation and reporting, Solid Waste Reduction, Water Conservation, Energy Management, and other sustainability and climate related initiatives. The incumbent will define, carry out, and document initiatives using data developed and measured from various sources as well as collect and analyze data from existing operations. In addition, the incumbent will assist in developing meaningful metrics and reports that best document progress and opportunity to advance the Agency’s and the Council’s sustainability and climate action goals.

These positions are eligible for a hybrid (both remote and onsite) telework arrangement. The candidate's permanent residence must be in Minnesota or Wisconsin.

What you would do in this job

Sustainability Projects:

Assists Sustainability Manager, Director of Engineering and Construction, in carrying out Metro Transit’s sustainability, energy, natural systems, and climate goals and objectives. Expectations in this role require a broad sense of sustainability and an ongoing desire to learn and evolve.

  • Support the development of Metro Transit Sustainability Plan (MTSP).

  • Play a key role in the Implementation of the MTSP.

  • Support refreshing the Council’s Climate Action Work Plan.

  • Uses data and metrics to create communication documents and tools to aid policy makers, managers, and employees in monitoring progress and making operational decisions.

Internal and External Collaboration:

  • Supports and assists other departments within Metro Transit with sustainable initiatives.

  • Support and facilitate MTSP related inter-departmental workgroups that advance desired outcomes.

  • Collaborate with other Metro Transit work groups and departments as well as Council divisions in carrying out the objectives of the Climate Action Work Plan and Metro Transit Sustainability Plan.

  • Participates and collaborates with external agencies and organizations to share and advance Metro Transit’s impacts and experiences regarding sustainability and climate action.

Manages Projects and Programs:

  • Lead on delivering on-line presence that highlights information and metrics to inspire change.

  • Co-leads Environmental Management System implementation and ongoing.

  • Co-leads “Big Data” project, which collects information related to facilities and systems for use in planning, analysis, and maintenance.

  • Document research and projects for future reference and implementation.

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

Any of the following combinations of related experience (in engineering, architecture, planning or related field) and completed education (degree field of study in Engineering, Architecture, Environmental Studies/Science, Engineering Technology, Architectural Technology, Construction Technology, Planning or related field.)

  • A high school diploma and seven (7) years of experience.

  • Associate degree and five (5) years of experience.

  • Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience.

What additional skills and experience would be helpful in this job (desired qualifications):

  • Experience designing and creating interactive engagement and educational materials to guide behavioral change.

  • Envision SP or LEED Green Associate credential.

  • Knowledge of Climate Action and Sustainability plans and the sustainability verification process.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Climate Action and Sustainability plans issued by peer agencies or similar entities with focus on operational impacts.

  • Skilled at facilitating meetings, through setting agendas, documentation, and follow ups.

  • Skilled at intermediate level use of MS Teams, MS Outlook.

  • Skilled at intermediate level use of MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint.

  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and present technical and project-related information.

  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects efficiently.

  • Ability to work independently and make decisions with minimal supervision.

  • Familiarity with SharePoint, Power BI, or MS Access a plus.

  • Ability to prepare presentations and speak effectively in front of groups both virtually and in person.

  • Ability to write summary reports and document research and/or outcomes.

  • Ability to analyze information to effectively identify and define problems, create solutions and inform decisions.

Work Environment:

Work is primarily performed in a standard office work environment however there will be some travel from primary work site to other sites and to construction sites, and occasionally out of state. At times incumbent in this position will be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, near moving parts and equipment, fumes and airborne particles and electrical items.
