Job Overview
Fairview is looking for a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist for Point of Care Testing to cover our 3 campuses (University of Minnesota Medical Center - West Bank, (https://www.mhealth.org/locations/campuses/university-of-minnesota-medical-center-west-bank-campus) M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center-East Bank , and (https://www.mhealth.org/locations/campuses/university-of-minnesota-medical-center-west-bank-campus) M Health Fairview Clinics & Surgery Center ). This is mainly a full-time day shift position, Mon-Fri, (no weekends or holidays) but requires some flexibility in scheduling and to cover alternate shifts or weekends as needed for special projects.
The Point of Care (POC) Medical Technologist plays a critical role in supporting laboratory operations by overseeing all point‑of‑care testing in alignment with manufacturer guidelines and regulatory standards, including CLIA, CAP, and Joint Commission requirements. This position ensures high‑quality, accurate testing through comprehensive operator training, competency assessment, equipment maintenance and monitoring, troubleshooting, quality control oversight, and proficiency testing coordination and review. The POC technologist serves as a key resource for maintaining compliance, promoting best practices, and supporting clinical staff in delivering reliable diagnostic results at the point of care.
Responsibilities
Monitor the proper functioning of all POCT instruments and testing processes across assigned sites.
Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements, institutional policies, and POCT procedures.
Conduct routine audits of POCT locations to assess compliance and identify improvement opportunities.
Enforce POCT policies and initiate corrective actions for non‑compliance events.
Complete all required POCT and hospital education programs.
Provide initial and ongoing training and competency assessments for POCT operators.
Maintain accurate documentation of staff training, competency evaluations, and operator certifications.
Conduct in‑service sessions and provide ongoing education to testing personnel.
Mentor students and new employees, serving as a professional role model.
Ensure parallel reagent checks for new reagent lots are performed according to protocol.
Assist in managing proficiency testing, linearity studies, and quality control programs for all POCT sites.
Review QC data regularly, investigate issues, and maintain organized records for regulatory review.
Work independently and collaboratively with clinical staff to resolve POCT‑related issues.
Apply critical thinking and analytical skills to troubleshoot instrument, reagent, and workflow problems.
Provide professional communication and support to physicians, nurses, laboratory staff, and other stakeholders.
Function as a Medical Technologist when needed, performing testing at a competency level equivalent to regular MT staff.
Deliver safe, effective, and efficient laboratory services in accordance with established standards. Maintain a professional demeanor and follow established standards for communication and telephone etiquette.
Promote teamwork across departments and shifts by assisting colleagues to ensure efficient POCT operations.
Support hospital initiatives and participate in hospital‑based and community events.
Perform additional tasks as assigned by the POCT Supervisor in a timely and accurate manner.
Availability for early‑day hours and occasional weekend assignments is required.
Required Qualifications
Baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited college/university in a related laboratory field including the related lab practicum or equivalent routes meeting qualifications as high complexity testing personnel as specified in CLIA ’88.
Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution. • Diploma with field of study listed or transcript must be provided. or
Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university with 16 semester hours in biology including one semester in microbiology and 16 semester hours in chemistry including one semester in organic or biochemistry. • Transcript must be provided. or
A transcript evaluation verifying equivalency to a U.S. Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university. • Equivalency verification documentation must be provided. or
Completion of a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course and a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university with 16 semester hours in biology including one semester in microbiology and 16 semester hours in chemistry including one semester in organic or biochemistry. • Transcript must be provided. or
Master’s degree from an accredited college/university in molecular biology, biotechnology, chemistry, biology, cytology, immunology, immunohematology, microbiology, allied health, medical laboratory science, or an appropriately related field. • Diploma with field of study listed or transcript must be provided.
Applicant should possess or be eligible to receive appropriate Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) approved laboratory certification. • ASCP, ASCPi, or AMT – MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist) or MT (Medical Technologist) within 1 Year or
HEW Medical Technologist certification may be considered.
