Provides hands-on, technical garden maintenance and labor with on-the-job training in sustainable vegetable production, in all weather conditions, at the following sites: Farm at the Arb, Urban Research Outreach and Engagement Center (UROC) Growing Good sites, and at other Arboretum gardens as assigned. Responsibilities These examples do not include all possible responsibilities in this work and do not limit the assignment of related responsibilities in any position of this class. Responsibilities vary according to site, and include the following as listed in a individual job process training schedule with an assigned staff mentor for the state of MN Registered Coordinate packaging, scheduling, and delivery of produce. Conduct maintenance on greenhouses and farm equipment. Maintain detailed paper and electronic records of farm activities, yields, and conditions. Apprenticeship Perform tasks to maintain crops: removing weeds, watering, and planting seeds. Harvest, sort, and store fruits and vegetables to maintain quality and freshness. Follow crop plans to guide planting schedules and field layouts. Manage composting and soil preparation to enhance crop growth. Implement sustainable pest control methods and care for plant health. Prepare accurate harvest lists based on crop maturity and orders Supervision Incumbents may serve as lead workers (e.g., assign, schedule, direct work) of University staff but are not PELRA supervisors. Incumbents may supervise student employees. Qualifications Required High school diploma or the equivalent. Must have or be able to obtain a valid driver's license prior to employment and able to pass a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR). Ability to lift up to 50 pounds; 30 pounds throughout the week. Ability to work in all weather conditions. Completion of Farm at the Arb Sustainable Horticulture Certificate is preferred.
