Student Intern (Residential Division-RHY)
The Opportunity
Walkabout is a transitional independent living program in Freeport serving runaway and homeless young men and women ages 16-23. The program provides shelter and services for up to 18 months to prepare young adults for independent living. The program is 100% voluntary. All referrals come from the Nassau County youth crisis shelter, Nassau Haven.
The intern will assist by providing individual supportive counseling with clients on a weekly basis (up to 10 clients in caseload) and completing progress notes. They will also gain experience conducting workshops and facilitating groups during Monday night house meetings. In addition, the intern will provide referrals to clients, conduct ISPs (Individual service plans) and goal planning for each resident on a monthly basis, and participate in Step up to Success (independent living skills) tasks with clients.
Responsibilities
Provide weekly individual supportive counseling to residents (caseload of up to 10 clients)
Complete timely and accurate progress notes and maintain documentation in electronic records
Assist in developing, implementing, and monitoring Individual Service Plans (ISPs) and monthly goal planning
Facilitate or co-facilitate workshops and group sessions during weekly house meetings (Monday evenings)
Provide referrals to community resources, including education, employment, healthcare, and social services
Support residents in developing independent living skills through participation in Step Up to Success (SU2S) activities
Assist with intake processes and transitions for new residents when needed
Collaborate with program staff to support resident progress and continuity of care
Participate in supervision, staff meetings, and case reviews as required
Maintain accurate records and ensure documentation is audit-ready
Assume other tasks, projects or responsibilities as needed to ensure the effective operation of the program, which may include assisting at our Runaway Homeless Youth Emergency setting.
Qualifications
- 1st Year Master of Social Work (MSW) Student
Schedule:
Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 Semesters
14 Hours per week max
Monday evenings from 5-10pm required, other days can be flexible
