SCOPE OF POSITION:
Do you love applying your creativity to solve problems? Are you passionate about the details? The Design Technician supports the New Product Delivery team in their quest to design and develop the latest and greatest building product offerings for our customers.
In this role, you will work directly to support the design, development, assembly, and testing of our products. You will work in a fabrication space, getting hands on with materials, technology, and equipment that are used to support our development efforts. Your input will be used to drive design decisions, and your expertise will be leveraged to develop solutions for our NPD and Research and Development teams.
The Design Technician will support the New Product Delivery team by delivering product mockups, models, test installations, and prototypes through various stages of development. The responsibilities will be inclusive of fabrication of physical concepts, sourcing solutions from industry resources, and responsibilities for the shared fabrication workshop facilities. The successful candidate will hold a proven track record of previous employment where he/she achieved completion and measurable benefit to product developments.

Concept & Mockup fabrication
Strong knowledge of prototyping techniques and natural craftsmanship abilities for the fabrication, evaluation, and troubleshooting of functional and cosmetic prototypes for various stages of the concept development process.
Experience creating architectural building products, furniture, woodworking or other similar concepts with various components and raw materials using hand tools and machinery.
Conduct prototype evaluation and hands-on concept testing, and modelmaking with varieties of 3D printing methods
Building mockup spaces, developing procedures and methods for installing existing and concept products.
Strong ability to understand and complete technical projects based on drawings, sketches, and verbal communication.
Creative and analytical, yet practical in problem solving with strong mechanical aptitude.
Prepare and test samples to evaluate load capacity, fire resistance, peel and shear strength, impact resistance, and thermal stability.
Document all test findings.
Sourcing and research
Inquisitive and willing to learn new methods and bring forward new ideas.
Experience sourcing with outside vendors & manufactures for supplying components or assemblies to further develop concepts
Tracking outside services and holding partners responsible
Positive approach; strong team player; strong work ethic; high integrity; sense of urgency; self-motivation and driven for results.
Experience in the disassembly/evaluation of competitive products.
Shop management
Stay ahead of new prototyping technologies and make proposals for shop improvements.
Assist in the construction of NPD lab test fixtures & displays.
Maintain a safe, clean, and orderly workshop.
Manage material inventory and place orders accordingly.
Maintain hand tools and power machinery, working with service providers, and ensuring equipment is ready when needed.
Must be organized and extremely detail oriented.
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE/ SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE/ EDUCATION: (Minimum Education and/or Experience required)
Technical degree or equivalent work experience required, bachelor’s degree preferred.
Creating product concepts and mockups ace using mills, planers, jointers, shapers, table saws, drill presses
5 years of experience in prototype fabrication.
10 years of safe working experience using hand tools, power tools and fabrication machinery.
Intermediate experience of Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word) for tracking projects and general communication.
3D printer experience including Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) and Stereolithography (SLA)
