Job Description

The CNC Process Engineer will lead the standardization and optimization of CNC machining operations across multiple identical vertical machining cells. This role involves converting subject-matter expertise into clear, repeatable shop-floor documentation, defining escalation tiers, and serving as the advanced technical escalation point for unique failures. The position also drives continuous improvement initiatives focused on cycle time reduction, tool life, chip evacuation, and tooling strategy, often collaborating directly with tooling vendors to design custom solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Capture tribal knowledge from CNC subject matter experts and translate it into standardized documentation.

  • Create and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Operator-Driven Reliability (ODR) tasks.

  • Develop troubleshooting guides and decision trees for rapid issue resolution.

  • Standardize documentation across identical machine cells while clearly identifying exceptions.

  • Establish escalation tiers and support model for operators, skilled trades, and CNC engineers.

  • Provide high-level CNC troubleshooting and root cause analysis.

  • Improve process reliability, repeatability, and uptime.

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on cycle time and process stability.

  • Lead tooling optimization efforts including tool selection, feeds/speeds, and tool life management.

  • Collaborate with tooling vendors to design custom tooling solutions.

  • Address chip evacuation and high-volume machining challenges.

  • Develop training materials and deliver hands-on training for operators, skilled trades, and engineering staff.

Essential Skills

  • 5+ years of CNC machining or CNC process engineering experience.

  • Strong documentation and technical writing skills.

  • Proven experience with troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement.

  • Ability to work directly on the manufacturing floor.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with Haas NGC control.

  • Knowledge of Haas Advanced Tool Management (ATM).

  • Understanding of global macro variables, mathematical operators, and logical functions in CNC programming.

  • Experienced CAM programmer.

  • Experienced G-code programmer.

  • Familiarity with Midaco (or similar) pallet change systems and programming.

  • Extensive knowledge of tooling selection and application.

  • Experience with high-volume machining, automated fixturing, pallet systems, and robot automation related to CNC machining.

Work Environment

This position is onsite in Middlebury, Indiana. The role involves working directly on the manufacturing floor, collaborating with various teams and vendors to optimize CNC machining operations. A per diem allowance is provided.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Middlebury, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $50.00 - $60.00/hr.
