Aerotek Refrigeration Technician in Mesa, Arizona

Job Title: Refrigeration Technician

Job Description

This role focuses on building, installing, testing, and troubleshooting advanced refrigeration and HVAC systems in a modern, climate-controlled manufacturing environment. The Refrigeration Technician applies strong electrical, mechanical, and diagnostic skills to ensure refrigeration units, air-cooled chiller systems, and associated controls operate safely, efficiently, and reliably. The position involves hands-on work with compressors, motors, variable frequency drives, PLC control systems, and smart components that communicate via industrial protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Read, interpret, and work directly from electrical power wiring diagrams and wiring schematics to perform accurate installations and repairs.

  • Apply proper refrigerant charging methods, including determining the correct system charge during operation using superheat and subcooling measurements.

  • Build and test new refrigeration systems, including air-cooled chiller units, following engineering specifications and compliance schematics.

  • Install refrigeration units and PLC control systems, ensuring correct wiring, configuration, and integration with system controls.

  • Observe and test newly built systems to verify correct operation, performance, and safety before release.

  • Troubleshoot refrigeration equipment failures, including mechanical, electrical, and control-related issues, using systematic diagnostic methods.

  • Perform advanced operational troubleshooting that focuses on understanding system behavior and controls rather than only replacing components.

  • Work with various compressor types, including reciprocating, scroll, screw, and centrifugal compressors, to support installation, testing, and repair activities.

  • Handle different fan and motor types, such as AC single-phase, AC three-phase, DC, permanent magnet, and EC motors, including testing, operation, and basic troubleshooting.

  • Operate, program, and troubleshoot Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) for fans, pumps, and compressors as part of system control strategies.

  • Read and interpret blueprints and compliance schematics to guide assembly, installation, and repair work.

  • Replace worn seals, outer shells, and worn-out motors to restore equipment to proper operating condition.

  • Perform electrical circuit troubleshooting to identify and resolve issues in power and control circuits.

  • Charge, recover, and evacuate refrigerant systems using industry-standard tools, procedures, and safety practices.

  • Work with electronic refrigeration valves and associated controls, including setup, adjustment, and troubleshooting.

  • Install, connect, and troubleshoot smart components and devices that communicate via Modbus or BACnet networks.

  • Support repair activities by installing software, updating settings, and testing units after maintenance or modifications.

  • Perform brazing and soldering tasks on refrigeration piping and components to ensure leak-free, durable joints.

  • Adhere to all safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment and safe handling of refrigerants and electrical systems.

  • Collaborate with team members on the assembly line in a climate-controlled environment to meet production, quality, and reliability standards.

  • At entry level, assist technicians, perform basic maintenance and installations, and support limited troubleshooting tasks under supervision.

  • At certified technician level, independently perform service and repairs, troubleshoot refrigeration systems, and apply EPA-certified practices.

  • At higher level, provide expert troubleshooting and diagnostics, lead complex installations and service work, mentor junior technicians, and support field projects and engineering teams.

Essential Skills

  • Previous experience as a refrigeration technician, with 2+ years of hands-on experience preferred.

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • HVAC certification.

  • EPA certification for handling refrigerants (required at certified technician level).

  • Strong knowledge of refrigeration systems, including building and testing new systems and working with air-cooled chiller units.

  • Ability to read, interpret, and work from electrical power wiring diagrams, wiring schematics, blueprints, and compliance schematics.

  • Solid understanding of refrigerant properties, including superheat and subcooling, and their significance in system operation.

  • Proficiency in proper refrigerant charging, recovery, and vacuum procedures using industry-standard methods.

  • Experience troubleshooting mechanical and electrical failures in refrigeration and HVAC systems.

  • Hands-on experience with compressor types such as reciprocating, scroll, screw, and centrifugal compressors.

  • Experience working with AC single-phase, AC three-phase, DC, permanent magnet, and EC motors, including troubleshooting and testing 3-phase motors.

  • Practical experience with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), including operation, basic programming, and troubleshooting.

  • Experience with electronic refrigeration valves and related control systems.

  • Ability to install and work with PLC control systems and refrigeration units.

  • Experience working with smart components that communicate via Modbus or BACnet, including wiring and network connections.

  • Advanced mechanical and diagnostic skills with a focus on root-cause analysis rather than part swapping.

  • Brazing and soldering skills for refrigeration piping and components.

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively within a team environment.

  • Physical ability to lift and move up to 35 pounds, stand and walk for extended periods, and stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb portable ladders as required.

  • Good manual dexterity and multi-limb coordination for precise mechanical and electrical work.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience installing, configuring, and testing units, including software-related setup and verification.

  • Experience in working on an assembly line in a climate-controlled manufacturing environment.

  • Experience operating in a test lab environment or leading complex installations and service work (for High-level technicians).

  • Experience mentoring junior technicians and supporting field projects or engineering teams (for High-level technicians).

  • Familiarity with industry 4.0 technologies and modern, automated manufacturing systems.

  • Comfort working in a fast-growing, dynamic environment that values an entrepreneurial mindset.
