CNC I.D.-O.D. GRINDER / MANUAL GRINDER

Position Summary

Sets up and operates machines to grind workpieces according to specifications, tooling instructions, and standard charts, applying knowledge of grinding methods.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Read blueprints or job order for product specifications, such as dimensions and tolerances, tooling instructions, such as fixtures, feed rates, cutting speeds, depth of cut, and determines sequence of operations.
  • Verify gaging methods are adequate to produce the necessary quality requirements.
  • Document all essential information on forms such as the job traveler, inspection tags and layout sheets.
  • Position and secure workpiece in holding device, machine table, chuck, centers or fixtures, using clamps and wrenches. 
  • Move controls to position tool and workpiece in relation to each other, and to set specified feeds, speeds, and depth of cut.
  • Observe operation of machine and verify conformance of machined workpiece to specifications, using measuring instruments, such as fixed gauges, calipers, and micrometers.
  • Operate bench grinder to sharpen tools.
  • Communicate with shop supervisors & leads to coordinate activities to meet production schedules.
  • Inspect and measure parts to maintain accuracy & quality.
  • Keep accurate records of production quantities.
  • Report defective parts and complete appropriate documentation when defects are identified.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area.

     

Required Training & Experience

  • High School diploma and 5 years grinding experience.
  • Familiarity with machine maintenance and proven knowledge in commands to retrieve preprogrammed instructions.
  • Practical experience reading and comprehending blueprints and work instructions and following established safety procedures.

     

Preferred Skills

  • Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • SPC experience
  • Self-motivation skills and attention to detail.
  • Good communication skills.

     

Visual Acuity

Near acuity and accommodation are required for reading blueprints and precision measuring instruments used in the inspection of parts.

 

Hearing Ability

Ability to monitor machine sounds to identify and diagnose changes to take appropriate action.
