Position Overview:

The SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory's Office of Contractor Assurance Contract Management's Quality Assurance team has an exciting employment opportunity for a Quality Assurance Process Manager.

As a member of our Quality Assurance Team, you will support the laboratory quality program on one of our Major Projects. This position is responsible for developing, implementing and executing effective quality assurance practices to mitigate quality risk and ensure compliance. You will also participate in the improvement of SLAC's quality management system. You will partner closely with other central laboratory functions and specific project management team(s) to provide Quality Assurance support and leadership. You will be responsible and accountable for ensuring the SLAC Quality Assurance Program requirements are appropriately applied to the project.

You will assist in identifying and developing the necessary quality control practices to: design lifecycle, procurement, manufacturing and delivery of products, testing, and operations of the infrastructure/products/services of assigned projects. Job activities may include all of the following: project/program quality planning, cross-functional business process and production process development, process implementation, assessing and implementation of corrective actions and improvements.

The Quality Assurance Process Manager reports to the Director of Contractor Assurance and Contract Management.

Your specific responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Collaborate closely with scientists, engineers, and technicians from SLAC and partner laboratories to implement quality principles throughout project planning, design life cycle, systems engineering, procurement, manufacturing, testing, receiving, inspections, construction, installation, and commissioning processes.

  • Act as the primary point of contact for quality assurance on assigned projects, ensuring that quality deliverables are completed and compliant.

  • Communicate effectively with various directorates and divisions within SLAC to advocate for a risk-based, graded approach to quality assurance.

  • Evaluate Statements of Work (SOW) to identify and define quality requirements.

  • Review Quality Management Plans from suppliers and subcontractors to verify compliance with quality requirements.

  • Assess manufacturing documentation to ensure it meets essential quality criteria and facilitates effective inspection and testing of materials and assemblies.

  • Oversee the nonconformance process, including participation in the evaluation and approval of nonconformance issues.

  • Manage the Corrective Action and Preventive Action processes, guiding the organization or project through the completion of necessary actions.

  • Conduct assessments or audits at SLAC, partner laboratories, subcontractors, and suppliers in alignment with established quality plans and contractual obligations.

  • Establish, review, and analyze performance metrics to make recommendations aimed at enhancing or modifying programs or processes to drive necessary quality improvements.

  • Ensure compliance with document control processes and methods related to systems engineering, design management, and quality assurance.

  • Provide quality-related support and technical assistance to other teams within the laboratory as needed.

  • Engage in the SLAC initiative for improving the Quality Assurance Program, including participation in cross-laboratory assessment teams.

  • Lead and manage quality programs, processes, or functions with minimal supervision.

  • Evaluate training needs and possibly develop relevant training materials for quality related processes.

  • Perform additional quality assurance tasks as required by laboratory management or other relevant authorities to support overall laboratory compliance and operational efficiency.

To be successful in this position:

  • Bachelor's degree in physics, Engineering or related technical fields and a minimum of 5 years of experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. including the following:

  • Manufacturing operations or engineering in a sustaining or quality assurance role

  • Demonstrated expertise/capabilities in process improvement, root cause analysis, and data analysis.

  • Developing, implementing and maintaining quality or process improvement plans and projects.

  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse teams, across multiple locations. Strong collaboration skills are needed.

  • Able to work both in a team environment as well as work independently.

  • Experience in construction management and/or implementing construction quality control plans for green field, existing large-scale facility upgrade or projects in support of infrastructure designed and built to deliver science and research facilities is a strong plus.

  • Certification in and experience as a Certified Quality Manager or Lead Auditor in ISO 9001 QMS or similar standards is a strong plus.

Physical requirements and working conditions:

  • Must be able to physically conduct field inspections and participate in project walk-downs which may require the following activities: walking in and around a construction site, climbing ladders, scaffolding, using fall protection and using other personal protective equipment (PPE), walking on elevated platforms, walking on uneven surfaces, and maneuvering around very small and/or confined spaces

  • Ability and willingness to travel to partner laboratories as well as internationally to key suppliers up to one to two weeks at a time.

The expected pay range for this position is $120,038 - $153,486 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
