Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29 Part-Time Adult Family Literacy Specialist in Mar Lin, Pennsylvania

JOB TITLE: Part-Time Adult Family Literacy Specialist

JOB ASSIGNMENT: SCIU/LifeLong Learning Center

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP: The position reports directly to the Director of Curriculum and Instruction and/or the Lifelong Learning Center Coordinator.

 

JOB DEFINITION: The Adult Family Literacy Specialist conducts class and individual instructional sessions for any of the following: Adult Basic Education (ABE), English as a Second Language (ESL), Family Literacy and/or Adult Secondary Education (ASE)/General Educational Development (GED).

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Duties of this position include, but are not limited to: 1. Must be proficient in higher-level math and literacy skills and be comfortable with remediating Science and Social Studies students. 2. Conduct ongoing assessment to determine learners' educational functioning levels and instructional needs. 3. Develop individualized learning plans that support learners' academic, employment, and family-related goals. 4. Integrate real-life, family-focused contexts into lessons to strengthen parents' ability to support their children's learning. 5. Maintain accurate attendance, assessment, and progress documentation in accordance with PDE requirements. 6. Plan and facilitate evidence-based parenting education sessions that help parents understand child development, school expectations, and effective home-learning strategies. 7. Design and lead structured parent-child learning activities that promote early literacy, language development, and positive family engagement. 8. Provide instruction on topics such as literacy development, positive discipline, communication, and supporting learning at home. 9. Maintain regular communication with ECE staff to align adult instruction, parenting education, and ILA with children's learning. 10. Assist with outreach, recruitment, and retention of eligible families as needed. 11. Perform case management duties to assist adult students with barriers and transitioning into post-secondary or the workforce. 12. Follow guidelines set by the Division of Adult and Family Literacy at the Pennsylvania Department of Education. 13. Assist with office duties when needed.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED: 1. A minimum of a Bachelor's degree is required. 2. Assessment Certification or able to complete the certification training. 3. Experience working with adult learners is preferred. 4. Proficiency in math and literacy skills.

 

ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Current, approved Act 34 (PA State Police), Act 151 (PA Child Abuse Registry) and Act 114-FBI Fingerprint clearances are required and must be renewed at appropriate, specific intervals pursuant to Act 153 of 2014 (revised Act 15 of 2015). 2. Current, approved Act 126 Mandated Reporter Training certificate showing completion of a minimum of three (3) hours of training every five (5) years. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. 2. This is an active position requiring the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, and have the ability to lift and/or move objects up to 50 lbs.; verbal and hearing skills to effectively communicate; visual acuity to oversee projects, and make observations. Work is done mainly indoors but could include outside tasks.

TIME AND SITE REQUIREMENTS: 1. The Adult Family Literacy Specialist shall be employed on a part-time basis for up to 15 hours per week. The specific work hours, daily schedule, and work year shall align with those established for the employee representative group as outlined in the applicable agreement or administrative guidelines. Adjustments to he work schedule may occasionally be required to meet program or organizational needs. Attendance at work is a requirement of this position; any and all absences must be approved by the immediate supervisor. 2. Must have transportation to work locations.
