The Application Scientist Imaging & AI enables AI‑centric product innovation by collecting and contextualizing imaging data and workflows, validating AI‑supported imaging concepts through hands‑on experimentation, and contributing to cross‑functional concept development with Application Management, Product Management, and R&D. This position is limited to one year and located at the EMBL Leica Imaging Center in Heidelberg
This position reports to the Manager Product Management Software and is part of the global Leica Life Science Research Product & Innovation Management Team located in Wetzlar and Mannheim and will be an on-site role.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
Collect high‑quality samples, Images, ground‑truth data, and representative imaging workflows across multiple light‑microscopy technologies
Capture, analyze, and contextualize end‑to‑end imaging workflows to inform AI‑centric product innovation
Validate & Test AI‑supported imaging workflows and early prototypes through hands‑on experimental imaging
Contribute to concept studies by translating application insights into actionable input for AI‑enabled solutions
Collaborate closely with Application Management, Product Management, and R&D within a cross‑functional innovation environment
The essential requirements of the job include:
Advanced degree (Master’s degree, PhD, or equivalent) in life sciences, bioengineering, or a related scientific discipline
Hands‑on experience working with confocal and widefield light‑microscopy systems, as well as additional microscopy modalities, in a research or applied setting
Demonstrated experience in designing, executing, and documenting experimental imaging workflows
Practical experience curating, organizing, and working with complex imaging‑related datasets using computer‑based tools and systems
Experience collaborating in cross‑functional product, application, or R&D environments supporting technology or product development
It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:
- Supporting imaging workflows and applications, for example through work in a microscopic imaging facility or a comparable applied imaging environment
