Histology Lab Supervisor

Job Description

The Histology/Pathology Lab Supervisor provides hands-on leadership and actively participates in all aspects of daily operations of our dermatopathology lab, including specimen grossing, fixation, tissue cutting, staining, supply management, and equipment maintenance. This role ensures that lab workflows meet the highest standards of patient safety, quality, and turnaround time. The Supervisor oversees and supports the technical staff, ensures proper training, and serves as a key point of contact for resolving specimen and personnel-related issues. In collaboration with lab managers and sr. leadership, this individual also drives process improvements to enhance overall lab efficiency and performance.

Responsibilities

  • Maximize team efficiency, productivity, and teamwork of Histotechnicians and Laboratory Assistants by providing daily communication, supervision, and direction in alignment with company philosophy, goals, and objectives.

  • Attend quarterly and monthly team leader meetings.

  • Lead approved team meetings at appropriate intervals and ensure that time is productive.

  • Create and update dermpath staff work schedules as needed.

  • Approve PTO requests, maintaining adequate staffing levels on a daily basis.

  • Manage timesheets and approve hours for biweekly payroll processing.

  • Provide managers with weekly updates on team performance, overtime, and attendance; schedule management; specimen volume data and projected staffing needs; and other pertinent issues.

  • Assist managers and Human Resources in hiring new team members and provide comprehensive orientation.

  • Complete 90-day and annual performance reviews and administer disciplinary action when required.

  • Accession, gross, measure, ink, cut, and input tissue information into the computer under the patient's name.

  • Process tissues on the processors and embed tissues daily.

  • Cut tissues on a microtome, mount on slides for staining, and stain tissues for H & E.

  • Perform immunohistochemistry or special stains on tissue by request of dermatopathologist.

  • Conduct daily maintenance of all equipment, change solutions, and maintain temperatures.

  • File blocks routinely.

  • Troubleshoot as needed and work with the dermatopathologist to maintain efficient workflow.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Essential Skills/Qualifications

  • Experience in histology, pathology, and working with a microtome.

  • Leadership skills with proven experience in managing teams.

  • Proficient in laboratory operations and workflow management.

  • Associate’s Degree in a science-related field is required; Bachelor’s Degree is preferred.

  • Successful completion of a histology training course is required; ASCP certification is preferred.

  • Minimum of 1 year of related lab experience is required; proven leadership experience is preferred.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Manitowoc, WI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $38.00 - $57.70/hr.
