Franklin County Personnel Department Public Defender in Malone, New York
PUBLIC DEFENDER Last date to file application: Documentation will be accepted until the position is filled. The Franklin County Personnel Department is accepting applications for the position of Public Defender within the Franklin County Public Defenders Department. The Public Defender will oversee professional, investigative, and clerical staff in a busy office that provides criminal defense services to individuals who cannot afford counsel, as well as representation in Family Court matters requiring assigned counsel. This role requires providing effective legal representation to protect clients rights. Duties include filing motions, performing legal research, amending petitions, and conducting hearings and trials. The Public Defender will appear in various courts and handle a range of cases, including felony matters, Family Court cases, misdemeanor cases in local criminal courts, and after-hours arraignments. Applicants should have strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills, along with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities. A commitment to serving low-income and underserved populations is essential. An interest in working with rural communities and an understanding of their unique needs is a plus.
Minimum Qualifications: Licensed to practice law in New York State and admitted to the NYS Bar.
