The Prototype Welder/Fabricator supports Product Engineering by building, modifying, and refining prototype components and assemblies. This role works closely with engineers and designers to transform concepts, drawings, and CAD models into functional prototypes used for testing, validation, and continuous improvement. The ideal candidate is highly versatile, detail‑oriented, and comfortable working in a fast‑changing, low‑volume environment.
Primary Duties
Fabricate and weld prototype parts and assemblies using TIG, MIG, and other welding processes
Work directly with Product Engineers to review designs, drawings, and concepts and provide manufacturability feedback
Interpret CAD drawings, engineering prints, sketches, and verbal instructions
Build first‑article prototypes and support design iterations and revisions
Modify existing prototypes based on test results or engineering changes
Select materials, tooling, and fabrication methods appropriate for prototype builds
Perform cutting, forming, bending, drilling, fixturing, and assembly operations
Ability to set up and operate fabrication equipment including welders, saws, grinders, sanders, cutting torch, hand-held plasma, drill press, iron worker, and basic hand tools.
Inspect prototypes for fit, function, and weld quality
Document build processes, issues, and improvement opportunities
Maintain a safe, clean, and organized fabrication workspace
Support testing, teardown, and root‑cause analysis as needed
Qualifications
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and basic GD&T preferred
Strong problem‑solving and critical‑thinking skills
Ability to work with minimal direction in an evolving development environment
Comfortable collaborating across engineering, testing, and manufacturing teams
High attention to detail and craftsmanship
Adaptability and flexibility with changing priorities
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
Mechanical aptitude and hands‑on creativity
Continuous improvement mindset
Education / Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training or certifications preferred
Welding and fabrication experience, preferably in a prototype, R&D, or low‑volume environment
Proficiency in TIG/MIG welding and CNC brake press progamming
Experience working with aluminum, steel, stainless steel, and other materials
