Job Title: Laser Operator

Job Description

The Laser Operator sets up, operates, and monitors CNC laser cutting equipment to produce precision sheet-metal parts used in industrial carts, cabinets, tables, and workstations. This role ensures materials are cut accurately, efficiently, and safely in alignment with production schedules and quality standards while supporting a fast-paced manufacturing operation.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate CNC laser cutting machines, including Prima Power fiber laser systems, to produce precision sheet-metal components.

  • Load and unload sheet metal, including steel and stainless steel, onto and from the laser bed in a safe and efficient manner.

  • Select, verify, and run the correct programs, materials, and cut parameters for each job according to work instructions and blueprints.

  • Monitor laser operation continuously to ensure clean, accurate cuts, proper part nesting, and consistent quality throughout the production run.

  • Inspect finished parts using measuring tools such as calipers and micrometers to verify dimensional accuracy, edge quality, and overall finish.

  • Identify and remove dross or burrs as needed to meet quality and cosmetic standards.

  • Perform routine machine maintenance and cleaning to keep equipment in optimal working condition and reduce downtime.

  • Track production output accurately and report any quality issues, machine malfunctions, or material problems to leadership in a timely manner.

  • Move raw materials, work-in-process, and finished parts using forklifts, pallet jacks, or overhead cranes while following safe material-handling practices.

  • Read and interpret blueprints and production documents to understand job requirements and verify part specifications.

  • Use hand tools, tape measures, and other basic equipment to support set-up, adjustment, and inspection activities.

  • Follow all established safety procedures for laser operation, material handling, and working in a manufacturing environment.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with 5S or similar workplace organization practices.

  • Collaborate with team members and leadership to support production goals and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by leadership to support overall manufacturing operations.

Essential Skills

  • Experience operating manufacturing machinery, preferably CNC laser cutting equipment or similar automated production machines.

  • Ability to set up and operate machines, including selecting programs, adjusting parameters, and verifying correct materials.

  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints to understand dimensions, tolerances, and part requirements.

  • Hands-on experience using precision measuring tools such as calipers and micrometers to inspect parts.

  • Ability to use hand tools and a tape measure accurately in a production setting.

  • Previous experience in a manufacturing environment with exposure to production workflows and quality standards.

  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to understand how machines function and to perform basic troubleshooting.

  • Experience operating forklifts or similar material-handling equipment, or willingness to train and become certified.

  • Strong attention to quality and safety, with the ability to follow established procedures and work instructions.

  • Ability to work extended shifts in a fast-paced production environment and meet production targets.

  • Capability to lift, move, and handle sheet-metal materials safely as part of daily duties.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Previous experience with laser cutting equipment, press brake, punch press, or similar metal fabrication machinery.

  • Familiarity with Prima Power fiber laser systems or comparable CNC laser platforms.

  • Worked in sheet-metal fabrication, including working with steel and stainless steel.

  • Experience with press brake set-up and operation in addition to laser cutting is a plus.

  • Forklift or overhead crane experience in a manufacturing or warehouse environment.

  • General assembly or general labor experience within a production facility.

  • Demonstrated mechanical skills and the ability to learn new equipment and processes through on-the-job training.

  • Comfort working around high-noise, industrial equipment and following strict safety guidelines.

  • Interest in developing into higher-level machine operator, welding, or lead roles through internal training and advancement opportunities.

Work Environment

This position primarily works on 2nd shift from approximately 2:30 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., with initial training on 1st shift from approximately 5:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. or 2:30 p.m. The role is based in a manufacturing environment that can have high noise levels, dust, chemicals, oil, and grease, and may be hot, cold, or humid depending on conditions. The work involves standing for extended periods, handling sheet metal, and operating CNC laser equipment, forklifts, pallet jacks, or overhead cranes. Employees follow established safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment while working around industrial machinery and materials.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Machesney Park, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $24.00/hr.
