Introduction
IBM Content Manager 8 (CM8) is a core enterprise content management (ECM) platform that enables organizations to securely manage, store, and retrieve mission‑critical digital content at scale. CM8 supports complex workflows, high‑volume document processing, and enterprise‑grade availability across industries.
As a Software Developer Engineer on the Content Manager 8 team, you will design, develop, enhance, and maintain key components of the CM8 product. You will work on Java and C++‑based server components, APIs, integrations, and platform services that form a critical part of IBM’s ECM middleware stack.
This role is focused on product development and engineering excellence, including new feature development, defect resolution, performance improvements, and long‑term maintainability of the codebase. You will collaborate closely with architects, product management, quality engineering, and support teams to deliver robust, scalable, and secure software used by enterprise customers worldwide.
You will gain deep expertise in CM8 internals, including Library Server, Resource Manager, APIs, workflows, and database integrations, while working with modern development practices and tools.
Your role and responsibilities
Design, develop, maintain, and enhance Java and C++ components across multiple platforms.
Implement new product features, enhancements, and architectural improvements aligned with product roadmaps.
Debug complex defects, analyze root causes, and deliver high‑quality fixes through the full development lifecycle.
Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and technical decision‑making to ensure code quality and maintainability.
Optimize performance, scalability, and reliability of CM8 components.
Work across application server, database, and content repository layers to develop and troubleshoot end‑to‑end solutions.
Contribute to development of custom plug‑ins, event handlers, and user exits.
Support CI/CD pipelines, build systems, and development tooling used by the CM8 engineering organization.
Collaborate with QA, Support, and Operations teams to transition fixes and features smoothly into production.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior developers and new team members.
Contribute to architectural documentation, design specifications, and technical knowledge repositories.
Participate in design reviews, sprint planning, and backlog grooming activities.
Develop and maintain technical documentation, design artifacts, and developer‑focused guides.
Ensure delivered code meets IBM standards for security, reliability, and enterprise readiness.
Contribute to continuous improvement of development processes, tools, and engineering practices.

Required technical and professional expertise
5+ years of hands‑on software development experience in enterprise‑grade products.
Strong proficiency in Java and C/C++ as a full‑time software developer.
Solid understanding of software development lifecycle (SDLC), design patterns, and object‑oriented principles.
Experience with Windows, Linux, and UNIX operating systems.
Familiarity with WebSphere Application Server (WAS).
Preferred technical and professional experience
Exposure to enterprise content management (ECM) ecosystems including integration with external systems.
Experience working with database systems such as DB2, Oracle, or SQL Server.
Strong experience with APIs, SDKs, REST services, and web services.
Proficiency with CI/CD pipelines, build systems, IDEs, and version control tools.
Strong debugging skills, including analysis of logs, traces, and system dumps.
Ability to work across multiple layers of a complex enterprise system.
Strong analytical thinking, structured problem‑solving, and communication skills.
Self‑driven, fast learner, and comfortable working in a complex, fast‑paced environment.
Experience with CM8 deployments.
Over 5 years of hands-on experience with CM8 configuration, including item types, workflows, ACLs, and storage policies.
Exposure to enterprise content management (ECM) ecosystems including integration with external systems.
In-depth knowledge of IBM Content Manager v8 architecture, including libraries, resource managers, and database design.
Strong understanding of Content Manager eClient, IBM Content Navigator, and CM APIs.
Experience with CM8 APIs, including Java API, C++ API, and Web Services.
Experience with Library Server and Resource Manager, configuration best-practices for scale and issue resolution.
Knowledge of LDAP
Experience in using WebSphere and DB2 logs and related debug toolchain for diagnostics in both application and data tier of the CM8 application.
Experience supporting customers with enterprise-grade CM8 deployments with high availability and meeting SLA requirements.
