The Therapeutic Apheresis Unit is a patient care unit embedded in the Transfusion Medicine Division. The unit provides excellent patient care by providing the following procedures such as therapeutic plasma exchange, red cell exchange, photopheresis, stem cell collections, and more. The gift of blood helps save lives, and the demand for blood and blood products is great. Every 2 seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood, and more than 50,000 units of blood are needed each year at Cedars-Sinai alone. Our Blood Donor Services team knows how to make the donors' experience as comfortable as possible and respects their time and compassion. We take that extra step to make sure blood donors get the highest-quality experience possible.
Summary of Duties:
The Therapeutic Apheresis RN functions under supervision by charge nurse or senior licensed technical/clinical personnel in the Therapeutic Apheresis Unit and Blood Donor area.
Responsible for performing and monitoring therapeutic apheresis procedures, which involve separating and removing blood components to treat patients with various medical conditions. This includes managing apheresis machines, monitoring patient vital signs, educating patients, and ensuring proper documentation
Collecting whole blood from voluntary blood donors and performing blood component collection in house and on mobile blood drive sites
Serves as a problem-solving resource
Performs routine and specialized operational and support functions, such as assessment of health histories of blood and apheresis donors, stocking up supplies and assisting with setting up and breaking down of mobile blood drive sites with equipment and supplies
Performs blood component collection by apheresis for red cells, platelets and plasma
Participates in special projects and assignments as specified
Qualifications
Qualifications:
Education:
Graduate of an accredited nursing program required
License/Certification Requirements:
Current, unrestricted California RN License required
Current BLS from AHA or ARC
Experience:
A minimum of 1 year of nursing experience required
Prior blood donor experience preferred, but not required
