Robert Half Assistant Controller in Los Angeles, California
Description
Robert Half Management Resources is seeking an interim Assistant Controller to support a large nonprofit organization during a six‑month period of operational strain and audit preparation. Reporting to the Controller, this hands‑on consultant will help stabilize accounting operations, strengthen reconciliations and controls, and provide leadership across Accounts Payable, pledge accounting, and revenue processes. The ideal consultant brings strong nonprofit accounting expertise and the ability to execute while guiding teams through close and audit demands.
Key Responsibilities
Perform and oversee bank, balance sheet, and general ledger reconciliations, ensuring timely and accurate completion
Support and improve the 10‑day month‑end close, including review of monthly and quarterly GAAP financial statements
Provide hands‑on oversight of Accounts Payable, including accruals, 1099 reporting, and backlog remediation
Lead and support pledge and revenue accounting, including:
Recording and reconciling pledge revenue, cash receipts, and A/R
Reviewing revenue feeds from donor management systems and ensuring proper recognition under ASC 606 (as applicable to nonprofits)
Assisting with bad debt reserve analysis and endowment account tracking
Support audit and compliance activities, including preparation of schedules for financial statement audits, pension audits, and Form 990 reporting
Assist with required legal and regulatory filings (e.g., unclaimed property, property tax, exemptions)
Guide AP and pledge teams to improve accuracy, timeliness, and understanding of accounting impact
Strengthen documentation, controls, and routine processes to support audit readiness and cleaner close cycles
Participate in special projects and process improvements as directed by the Controller or CFO
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
7+ years of progressive accounting experience; nonprofit fund accounting strongly preferred
Strong understanding of pledge revenue, cash reconciliation, endowments, and nonprofit accounting principles
Proven ability to be hands‑on while providing leadership in high‑volume environments
Experience supporting audits, GAAP financials, and regulatory reporting
Strong analytical skills and ability to step in quickly with minimal ramp‑up
