Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Technologist 2/3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Research Technologist 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. The job responsibilities of each level are outlined below and will be assigned according to the level assessed during candidate selection.
The Technology Applications Group (A-3) is seeking a Research Technologist to support mission deliverables. A-3 uses a broad range of engineering and scientific expertise to support nuclear counter proliferation (NCP), nuclear counter terrorism (NCT), nuclear emergency response (ER) missions, defense, intelligence, and emerging technologies. A-3 has a very diverse customer and program base. The Group contributes to national programs intended to protect, deter, and respond to weapons of mass destruction through tailored training and by using specialized applied electromagnetic solutions, rapid prototyping, designing/building/testing/delivering tools and trainers along with novel safing technologies, RF solutions, and cyberphysical applications.
The Research Technologist will work on a team of engineers, designers, and scientists to develop solutions to challenging problems in national security. Your responsibilities will span design, fabrication, assembly, safety and security oversight for a staff shop, evaluating novel solutions for complex experiments, data collection, workflow management, and program development.
The hazards associated with this work include, but are not limited to, pressure, electrical, mechanical, chemical, and magnetic fields. Additionally, there are complex security considerations associated with the position. The successful candidate will be expected to supervise 1-3 technicians daily, and oversee the work conducted by multiple "drop-in" users of the A-3 staff-shop. You will be expected to develop and govern safety documentation, balancing resources within the shop, present capability briefs for external and internal partners/sponsors, assist with experimental design assembly, execution, data collection, and participate in (or lead) program development.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Research Technologist 2 ($96,600- $158,000):
Demonstrated experience in CNC, CAM, and CAD programing.
Demonstrated understanding of material properties as they apply to subtractive manufacturing.
Experience developing specifications for product/system/equipment design and/or production processes in support of research.
Experience mentoring less experienced staff.
Experience following and adhering to strict safety requirements and compliance when working with machinery or hazardous materials.
Ability to obtain a DOE Q and SCI clearances, which typically requires U.S. Citizenship
Research Technologist 3 ($106,400- $176,000):
In addition to the duties outlined above, the Research Technologist 3 must have:
Expert-level and demonstrated depth and breadth of knowledge in fabrication of complex parts and assemblies.
Experience articulating growth areas and the state-of-the-art as it pertains to subtractive manufacturing.
Demonstrated technical leadership in subtractive manufacturing.
Demonstrated mastery of workflow management and balancing shared resources.
Demonstrated experience developing specifications for product/system/equipment design and/or production processes in support of research.
Education/Experience Research Technologist 2 : Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience Research Technologist 3 : Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work is desirable.
Desired Qualifications :
Experience working with quick turnaround and/or high visibility projects
Experience working with vendors for parts or prototype fabrication
Experience with Solidworks, Mastercam or Creo.
Experience managing machine shop and working with machinists.
Experience managing project workflow as it relates to fabrication.
Experience with proposing work, responding to Request for Proposal (RFPs).
Experience with 5-axis machining.
Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment : Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility Requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test : The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular Position : Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
