Los Alamos National Laboratory Operations First Line Manager (Manufacturing Manager 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Lead our Operations Integration Center team, including Area Controllers and Work Execution Managers, as multi-disciplinary First Line Manager (FLM). As the central authority for work execution and scheduling, you'll coordinate complex operations, drive problem resolution, and serve as the primary communication hub for all schedule changes and delays affecting programmatic milestones. The FLM has comprehensive knowledge of the scheduled work and is responsible for understanding the interactions between work groups, coordination, and handoffs that must occur to effectively complete work.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Schedule Management

  • Manage and communicate the integrated schedule across all organizational stakeholders.

  • Oversee schedule development, preparation, readiness, and execution to meet production deliverables.

  • Present schedule adherence metrics and work completion reports to OIC management.

  • Serve as primary spokesperson for schedule status and issues to senior leadership.

Leadership & Operations

  • Lead cross-functional teams to maximize production availability.

  • Facilitate integrated schedule management meetings with large audiences.

  • Integrate complex, multidisciplinary work across facility operations.

  • Balance productivity goals with quality standards and compliance requirements.

Safety & Compliance

  • Implement Integrated Safety Management (ISM) for worker health, safety, environment, security, and quality.

  • Model exemplary safety behavior and maintain authority to pause or stop work when necessary.

  • Foster continuous improvement culture focused on incident prevention.

  • Ensure compliance with all operational, safety, security, and quality standards.

Business Management

  • Building and maintain high-performing teams aligned with organization goals.

  • Support financial management, human resources, procurement, and performance metrics.

  • Enforce quality standards while meeting production requirements.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Safety/Security: Thorough knowledge/understanding of the requirements for Integrated Safety Management, Formality of Operations, and Safety Basis.

Policy and Procedure: Thorough understanding of work hazards, safety practices, operating configuration, and facility policies and procedures.

Leadership: Demonstrated record of effective teamwork and leadership with the ability to prioritize multiple projects and successfully manage schedules. Demonstrated experience with schedule execution. Demonstrated management and leadership skills for overseeing an organization, including knowledge, skills, and abilities in resource management.

Communication: Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills to a wide range of audiences, including Laboratory Senior Management.

Management: Demonstrate experience managing day-to-day activities of organization. Thorough knowledge of and experience managing business operations to include financial, human resources, procurement, conflict resolution, and other related business activities. Strong negotiation skills.

Clearance: Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance which typically requires US citizenship.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a related field from an accredited institution and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

DOE Order 426.2A: Requires a bachelor of science degree in engineering or related science or technology, and 4 years of nuclear experience. Job-related education or experience may be substituted on a case-by-case basis. The degree may be used to substitute up to 50 percent of the experience requirement per section I 4.e of the Contractor Requirements Document (CRD).

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and understanding of Nuclear Facility conduct of maintenance, conduct of engineering, conduct of operations and quality assurance programs.

  • Active DOE 'Q' clearance

Work Location: The work location for this position is fully onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Work Schedule: This position requires 24/7 coverage and therefore may require working a rotating shift schedule that includes nights and weekends.

Work Environment: Working overtime and irregular schedule (weekends, night shift, and/or rotating shift schedule).

Duties will be performed in a Radiological Controlled Area. Employees must successfully complete required radiological worker training and comply with all applicable radiological safety procedures.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
