Los Alamos National Laboratory Occupational Health Deputy Division Leader (Occupational Med Manager 5) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

As the Deputy Division Leader for Occupational Health (OH) within ALDESHQ, you will serve as a key strategic partner to the Division Leader (OH-DO) and help shape the future of Occupational Health at the Laboratory. This is a high-impact leadership role responsible for advancing the operational excellence, technical rigor, and

organizational effectiveness of a division that directly supports the Laboratory's national security mission.

In this role, you will provide leadership, technical oversight, and management across all Occupational Health services and programs. You will help ensure the seamless delivery of critical business functions that safeguard workforce health, safety, and performance, including:

  • Hazard-based medical surveillance

  • Fitness-for-duty evaluations

  • Management of work-related injuries and illnesses

  • Restriction and accommodation oversight

  • Medical records governance

  • Workforce well-being initiatives

Beyond operational execution, you will drive strategic improvement. A central focus of this role is the development and implementation of meaningful metrics and key performance indicators to enhance efficiency, inform decision-making, strengthen process improvement initiatives, and elevate the customer experience across the Laboratory.

You will also partner closely with the Division Leader in stewarding organizational health and sustainability, including budget planning and fiscal oversight; strategic resource allocation; succession planning and employee engagement, recruitment and retention.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Business Operations & Performance Management:

Working knowledge of Los Alamos National Laboratory and of Occupational Health (OH) business functions accompanied by a demonstrated ability to design, implement, and assess meaningful metrics and key performance indicators that drive performance, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Strategic Planning & Process Improvement:

Proven experience contributing to organizational and operational planning, program implementation, and execution of complex projects and deliverables. Demonstrated proficiency with project management principles, methodologies, and tools.

Change Leadership:

Advanced ability to influence and guide stakeholders through change, gaining alignment and commitment in sensitive or complex situations while maintaining strong professional relationships.

Customer Focus:

Exceptional communication skills with a demonstrated ability to effectively engage and collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including internal customers, Laboratory leadership, DOE/NNSA, regulators, industry partners, and community representatives.

Technical Leadership & Team Development:

Demonstrated success building and sustaining high-performing teams through effective leadership, conflict resolution, program development, and employee growth strategies, including goal setting aligned with organizational objectives.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 12 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

Performance Measurement & Analytics:

Experience developing, implementing, and using performance metrics, dashboards, and key performance indicators (KPIs) to inform operational decision-making, improve efficiency, and measure program effectiveness.

Process Improvement Methodologies:

Experience applying structured improvement methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen, or continuous improvement frameworks to streamline processes and enhance organizational performance.

Project & Program Management Tools:

Working knowledge of project management frameworks and tools (e.g., Agile, Waterfall, PMI-based approaches) and experience using project management platforms to track deliverables, milestones, risks, and resources.

Data Analysis & Visualization:

Experience using data analysis and visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Excel-based analytics, Artificial Intelligence tools or similar platforms) to translate operational data into actionable insights.

Operational Excellence or Quality Management Experience:

Experience supporting or leading initiatives related to operational excellence, quality assurance, or performance management systems in complex organizational environments.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Work Schedule: Occupational Health does support 24/7 operations, and this position may require some evening or weekend hours in the future.

Directive 206.2: Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
