Los Alamos National Laboratory LANSCE User Facility Director (Senior Director) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Reporting to the Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for Physical Science, the LANSCE User Facility Director (LUFD) provides strategic leadership, vision, and operational oversight for the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE). The LUFD partners closely with the ALD and Chief Operating Officer (COO) to ensure safe, secure, and reliable operations while delivering excellence in mission execution.

The LUFD collaborates with the LANSCE Facility Operations Director (FOD) and Division Leaders across Accelerator Operations and Technology, Physics, Materials Science and Technology, Materials Physics and Applications, and Chemistry to ensure integrated, high-performing facility operations. The LUFD will also be responsible for overseeing and integrating a national user program that serves the needs of NNSA and over 500 users each year who come to LANSCE from around the world to perform materials and nuclear science research.

The LANSCE facility is amid a significant capital project upgrade, with CD-0 for the LAMP project achieved. This has led to other significant facility investments for the accelerator and its end stations in terms of growth of the NNSA operations and maintenance budgets as well as a new portfolio, LANE, which looks to enhance capability at the six LANSCE end stations. The LUFD serves as a convening authority for facility strategic planning and implementation as well as project coordination and enablement.

This role requires a visionary leader who will:

  • Secure and steward resources to meet mission requirements and sustain safe, reliable operations

  • Develop and execute long-term strategies, including major recapitalization, to ensure continued facility viability

  • Lead and integrate a national user program serving NNSA and more than 500 annual users from the global scientific community

  • Represent and advocate for LANSCE with NNSA, the DOE Office of Science, and the broader scientific and stakeholder communities

  • Coordinate capability and resources across the other NNSA accelerator facilities.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Proven leadership and management experience, including developing personnel and leading across organizations

  • Demonstrated success managing large scientific facilities and/or complex facility projects with significant programmatic scope

  • Strong track record in strategic planning, innovation, technical advocacy, and advancing scientific excellence

  • Recognized research accomplishments (e.g., publications, patents, professional leadership)

  • Experience in fiscal management, including budgeting, oversight, and project execution

  • Experience leading organizations in the physical sciences, including growing research portfolios and resolving institutional challenges

  • Demonstrated experience managing safety and security in complex research environments

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively at all organizational levels

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance (typically requires U.S. citizenship)

Education/Experience: Education: PhD. In physics, materials science, chemistry or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in related areas that are relevant to the mission of the Division.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the U.S. nuclear stockpile and NNSA mission

  • Experience representing organizations with federal agencies (e.g., NNSA, DOE, DOW, NSF)

  • Familiarity with external funding agencies and sponsor engagement strategies

  • Experience managing accelerator facilities under DOE Order 420.2D

  • Experience managing projects under DOE Order 413.3B

  • Knowledge of LANSCE capabilities and the broader DOE/NNSA laboratory complex

  • Experience managing national user facilities

  • Ability to obtain an SCI clearance

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
