Los Alamos National Laboratory Equipment Technologist 2/3 (Research Technologist 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
The selected candidate will provide technical support as a Research Technologist (Research Technologist 2/3). In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining, optimizing, and improving manufacturing and production equipment to ensure maximum uptime, safety, and performance. This is a critical role for supporting production goals, introducing new technologies, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. Individuals working in this position will be interacting with multiple organizations to ensure the implementation and compliance with facility, institutional, state, and federal requirements.

This position will be filled at either the Equipment Technologist 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Research Technologist 2 ($96,600 - $158,000)
This role involves collaborating with a team of engineers and technologists to repair, maintain, and enhance electro-mechanical equipment, including systems related to welding, pressure, and robotics. The position is responsible for supporting and executing preventive and predictive maintenance programs, as well as promptly troubleshooting and resolving equipment malfunctions to minimize operational downtime. The individual will work closely with cross-functional, multi-disciplinary teams to coordinate programmatic maintenance and conduct corrective maintenance on down equipment. Additionally, the role includes participating in the planning, procurement, and implementation of new equipment within the manufacturing facility, while adapting to evolving technical requirements and consistently meeting safety, security, compliance, and scheduling standards. The position also requires assisting in the preparation and documentation of work authorizations to support operational and project activities.
Research Technologist 3 ($106,400 - $176,000)
In addition to the tasks outlined above, the Research Technologist 3 role is responsible for taking a larger leadership role including leading corrective maintenance, writing documents, and mentoring staff. The technologist 3 will drive continuous improvement of preventive and predictive maintenance programs to enhance equipment reliability and performance, in addition to collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams to coordinate and define programmatic maintenance. This position also leads the planning, procurement, and implementation of new equipment within the manufacturing facility, ensuring alignment with operational goals and technical requirements. A key aspect of the role includes mentoring and developing career staff and students to build technical capability within the organization. The individual is expected to independently communicate the status of equipment upgrades, maintenance activities, and machine operability to both management and peers. Furthermore, the role involves leading the development and refinement of work authorizing documents to support safe, compliant, and well-documented operations.

Minimum Job Requirements:
Proven participation in preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
Demonstrated experience troubleshooting and resolving equipment malfunctions and upgrading and modifying equipment.
Demonstrated compliance with safety and operational standards, including Lockout/Tagout.
Participated in designing, planning, and executing maintenance plans.
Demonstrated experience maintaining electromechanical and/or pressure systems.
Demonstrated ability to contribute independently in high-intensity environments and communicating with coworkers representing a variety of technical backgrounds and other organizations.
Demonstrated ability to express detailed ideas clearly in ways that build understanding, respect, and trust, as demonstrated through presentations and publications.
Demonstrated experience with continuous improvement concepts and tools.

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Enhanced technical and professional expertise of a junior staff through active mentoring and training.
Led in designing, planning, and executing maintenance plans.
Demonstrated experience mentoring and developing career staff and/or students.
Contributed ideas for new proposals and business development opportunities. Leads development of technical section of small to moderate proposals.
Influence organizational, project, and program strategies and directions. Leads technical decision-making at task level within a project. Makes decisions and/or recommendations that influence the achievement of key programmatic objectives.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.
DOE 426.2A: Requires a High School Diploma.
Desired Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience working in a glovebox or cleanroom environment.
Experience with Electrical, Welding, Pressure, and Laser Safety programs.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience implementing Laboratory or similar industry policies affecting research and development activities, equipment maintenance, projects, and/or initiatives.
Demonstrated knowledge or experience working in a manufacturing or production organization requiring implementation of defined manufacturing, testing and quality requirements.
Demonstrated experience working in a nuclear facility.
Demonstrated experience working with welding equipment to include Laser, Electron Beam, GTA, or GMA.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience with system and subsystem qualification testing and/or analysis.
Demonstrated experience applying continuous improvement concepts and tools.
Demonstrated experience performing engineering work using rigorous institutional processes.
Active Q clearance and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP).
Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): General Physical Mobility, standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending. Specific Physical Mobility use of both hands, use of both arms, use of both legs, use of both feet, carry/lift up to 20 pounds.
Work Schedule: This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees maybe eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, ยง712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
426.2A: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2A, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
